Jo All the Way wins the Copa de Oro Donostia (San Sebastián) 2011

Jo All the Way, (Gold away-Secret Question) the French raider owned by Gerard Agustin Normand, ridden by P Sogorb, and trained by Eli Lellouche for won the Copa de Oro Donostia 2011, by three lengths, with Abdel (SPA, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Leonor de Guzmán(Glauco)] second and Festeiro (SPA, 2008) [Fol Parade-New Vert(Vert Amande)] a close third. Young Tiger (FR, 2001) was fourth.

The race was led by Pazifiksturm (GER, 2007) (Samum), second in the 2010 edition, with Domeside (GB, 2006) (Domedriver) following him and Señor Miranda (GB, 2007) (Fantastic Light) third. In the far straight, Pazifiksturm was led to the outer part of the track (following the same strategy as last year, like his stable mate Dunnboinee, who was in the rear part of the field. However, this time, Domeside took the lead and, with a strong pace, put some distance and Pazifiksturm couldn't regain his position. Domeside (for blinkers for the first time) entered the home stretch first, but Abdel and (along the rail) Jo All the Way surpassed him, with Young Tiger behind them. Jo All the Way was clearly the best, and Abdel seemed a clear second until Festeiro, although disturbed by Young Tiger in his late charge, closed strongly and almost surpassed Abdel in the finish line.

Jo All the Way is three times Listed placed in France and had an official French rating of 47 before the race.

Both Abdel and Festeiro come from families related to the Copa de Oro, since the dam of Abdel is half sister to Ceremonioso (2nd in the 1996 edition) and Newango, half brother to Festeiro was second in 2007 and third in 2008.

Copa de Oro de San Sebastián this Monday

The races of this Monday in San Sebastián include the most important race of the summer season, the Copa de Oro de San Sebastián, a 2,400 m race for 3 y/o+, weight for age, one of the races of the Defi du Galop and a race that has among its winners big names in the history of Spanish racing, like Chacal (IRE), winner in 1974 and 1975, Rheffissimo (SPA), winner in 1976, El Señor (GB), winner in 1978, Akelarre, who won in 1990, the half brothers Kashwan (1998) and Persian Ruler (1999 and 2001) or, in recent years, the Prix du Cadran winner and now stallion in Spain Bannaby (FR), winner in 2008 (Video and 2010 (video) and Young Tiger (FR), winner in 2009.

This year, the favourite is Young Tiger, who won the 2009 edition and current holder of the title of the Defi du Galop

Here are the 10 partants:

Domeside (GB, 2006) [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher, will be ridden by J. Grosjean. Winner of the Villapadierna in 2009, he sustained an injury afterwards and reappeared this winter in Dos Hermanas (Seville). He then won brilliantly twice in Madrid, but his last two outings were disappointing.

Jo All the Way (GB, 2007) [Gold Away-Secret Question] owned by Gerard Agustin Norman, trained by E. Lellouche, will be ridden by P. Sogorb. Three times Listed placed in France, French rating of 47.

Karluv Most (FR, 2006) [Della Francesca-La Vltava], owned by Cuadra Cholaica, trained by J. L. Maroto, ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina. Winner of the GP Ciudad de Madrid in 2010, second this year. He doesn't seem to like this track, performing below expectations last year in this race. However, he ran well in the prep race for 4 yo, being second to Señor Miranda.

Pazifiksturm (GER, 2007) [Samum-La Parabol], owned by Cuadra Martul, trained by Ana Imaz, will be ridden by F Veron. He was second to Bannaby in the 2010 edition (with a bold movement of his jockey, going to the outer and drier side of the track in the far stretch. He then won the Villamejor (St. Leger) in Madrid. Although his connections have pointed to this race since last year, his performances so far have been well below expectations.

Plantagenet (SPA, 2007) [Trade Fair-Crafty Buzz] owned by Cuadra Whylar, trained by G. Arizkorreta, will be ridden by J. L. Martínez. Villapadierna (Derby) winner in 2010, has not lived up to his promise. Third in the GP Ciudad de Madrid. He refused to enter the starting gates last year.

Señor Miranda (GB, 2007) [Fantastic Light-Ringing Hill], owned by Cuadra Los Toneles, trained by F. rodríguez, will be ridden by R. C. Montenegro. Señor Miranda has placed in almost all big races in Spain for stayers, although never winning. He has won the prep race for 4 y/o, beating Karluv Most, he likes the track and will probably be the front runner.

Young Tiger (FR, 2001) [Tiger Hill-Youngolina] owned by Javier Gispert, trained by Rohaut, will be ridden by F. X. Bertras. Multiple listed winner, winner of this race in 2009, winner twice of the Defi du Galop, this bay gelding keeps winning at 10 and is the favourite.

Abdel (SPA, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Leonor de Guzmán], owned and trained by J. M. Osorio, Duque de Alburquerque, will be ridden by J. Crocquevieille. Third in the GP Nacional, he skipped the Villapadierna and won the prep race for this race for 3 y/o.

Dunnboinee (IRE, 2008) [King's Best-For Starters], owned by Cuadra Martul, trained by Ana Imaz, will be ridden by JJ. B. Hamel. Fourth in the Villapadierna, was beaten by Abdel in the Premio Diputación (although giving weight)

Festeiro (SPA, 2008) [Fol Parade-New Vert], owned by Cuadra Negredo, trained by M. Delcher (Senior), will be ridden by Jorge Horcajada. The sire of Festeiro, Fol Parade, won this race in 2005. Festeiro's half brother Newango was injured in this in 2009 and could not race again. Maurice Delcher Senior is retiring from training. So, the win of Festeiro, winner of the Cimera (1,000 guineas) and the GP Nacional would be very emotive. He was fifth in the Villapadierna (Derby) in his last start and has not run since then.

The race will be featured in the French channel Equidia
