Azafata won the Villamejor

[Slightly updated news, but written for the record]

Azafata (SPA, 2009) bay filly [Motivator-Anysheba(Alysheba)]. owned by Cuadra Chamartín, trained by J. López and ridden by Jorge Horcajada, won the Premio Villamejor (Spanish St. Leger, 2,800 m, 3yos, 20,000 euros for the winner), at the La Zarzuela racetrack Sunday 18 Nov, beating Ranyan (SPA, 2009), ch. gelding [Gold Away-Triple Two(Pivotal)], owned by Cuadra Agrado, trained by Teo Callejo and ridden by F. Jiménez by 4 lengths, with Teobaldo (Singspiel) third and Avante (Shamardal) fourth

Another highlight of the meeting was the Premio Gladiateur (4,000 m, 4yo+,. 10,000 euros for the winner). And the winner was Achtung (SPA, 2008), a bay colt [Sulamani-Aurea(Silvano)], owned by Cuadra Enalto, trained by Roberto López and ridden by Vaclav Janacek., beating Domeside (Domedriver) and Entre Copas (Sakhee). Achtung won the Premio Villamejor last year.

Minolto (Barathea) in the 1,400 m race for 2yos

Laura Moon (Russian Blue) in the 1,000 m race for 3yo+-

Blantor (Clodovil) in the 1,600 m split handicap (2nd part A), Callside (Pyrus) in the 2nd Part B and Don Fernando Hab (Intikhab) in the 1st part.

This was the last meeting of the La Zarzuela autumn season. Racing now continues in the Dos Hermanas (Seville) racetrack.

Mil Azul won the Antonio Blasco

Mil Azul (SPA, 2008), bay colt [Russian Blue-Cuittled(Charismatic)], owned by Yeguada Urdiñ-Oriya, trained by J. L. de Salas, ridden by Jorge Horcajada, won the Premio Antonio Blasco (1,400 m, 2yo+) in the La Zarzuela meeting of last Sunday. S Grillo (GB, 2008), gray gelding [Val Royal- Santiago Blue(Relaunch)], owned by Cuadra Ussía-Figueroa, trained by G. Arizkorreta was 2nd, with globetrotter As de Trébol 3rd and Risby fourth.


Negrete led the race with a strong pace, followed by As de Trébol. All five runners used the outer part of the track. Negrete went towards the rail in the home stretch and was surpassed by As de Trébol, and then Mil Azul and S Grillo, who were first and second at the finish line.

The Copa de Criadores  for colts was won in impressive fashion byAarhus (SPA, 2010), chestnut colt [Dyhim Diamond-Ensis(Zieten)], owned by Cuadra El Molino, trained by J. López and ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina, with Duendecillo (Visindar) 2nd seven lengths behind and Mayo (Sakhee) third.

Premio Antonio Blasco and Copas de Criadores tomorrow at LZ

Casaca won the Memorial and Pearlside won the Gran Critérium

Casaca (GB, 2006), ch. filly [Medicean-Priena(Priolo)], owned by Cuadra África, trained by J. M. Osorio and ridden by Jeremy Crocquevieille, won yesterday the GP Memorial Duque de Toledo (2,400 m, 3yo+, weight for age, 30,000 euros), beating the favourite Pazifizsturm (GER. 2007) [Samum-La Parabol(Trempolino)], owned by Cuadra Martul, trained by Ana Imaz Ceca and ridden by J.B. Hamel, with Casaca's half brother and stablemate Entre Copas (Sakhee) third and Arnuero (Sakhee) fourth.


Entre Copas was the frontrunner and kept the lead for the first half of the home stretch, in which he was surpassed by Pazifiksturm who looked like he was to win. However, in a long and progressive late charge, Casaca came from last at the beginning of the stretch to win by a margin of one and a half lengths.



This is the most important race won by Casaca, who was the best filly in Spain in 2011 (winning the Premio Kutxa and the Premio Benítez de Lugo) and was 3rd in the Prix Fille de l'Air (Gr. 3). She sustained an injury and reappeared in July in San Sebastián, being 5th, then 3rd in the Premio Kutxa, then 2nd in Madrid in the Benítez de Lugo and now winner of the Memorial.

In the Gran Critérium (1,600 m, 2yo, 24,000 euros), the winner was also a filly, Pearlside (FR, 2010), bay filly [Alhaarth-Prickly Pearl(Lahib)], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher S and ridden by J. Grosjean, beating easily Dagoberto (Dyhim Diamond), with Sleeping Wan (Sleeping Indian) third and Mou the Special (Refuse to Bend) fourth.

Pearlside won the Premio Carlos Sobrino in her previous start and is the half sister to Baldoria (also winner of the Gran Critérium and winner at 3 of the GP Ciudad de Madrid).

GP Memorial Duque de Toledo and Gran Critérium this Sunday at La Zarzuela

Next Sunday at La Zarzuela there is a meeting with 7 races including the Memorial Duque de Toledo (2,400 m, 3yo+, weight for age, 30,000 euros for the winner), one of the highlights of the season and the Gran Critérium (1,600 m, 2yo, 24,000 euros for the winner)

Winner of the Mijas Cup,also won in Morocco and the Copa de Oro de San Sebastián. He will be the favourite and his win would mean an outstanding year. Cielo Canarias won the GP Hispanidad

Cielo Canarias (IRE, 2008), a bay gelding [Exceed and Excel-Summer Dance(Saddler's Wells)], owned by Cuadra Grupo Bolaños, trained by E. León and ridden by J. L. Martínez won last Friday at the La Zarzuela racetrack the GP Hispanidad (1,600 m, 3yo+, weight for age, 24,000 euros for the winner), beating easily Weststow (Medicean) by four lengths, with Jakemate (Denver County) and Mil Azul (Russian Blue) close third and fourth.

This fourth consecutive win of Cielo Canarias means he has won two of the top miles of the year (Gobierno Vasco and GP Hispanidad), which makes him the best miler in Spain.

The favourite Ariete Arrollador didn't have a good travel and Silverside finished last in his reappearance after one year without racing.

GP de la Hispanidad tomorrow at La Zarzuela

 This Friday, National holiday in Spain, is the running of the GP de la Hispanidad, one of the highlights of the autumn season and one of the six races under consideration for upgrading to Listed level next year. It is a 1,600 m race for 3yo+, with a purse of 24,000 euros for the winner.

These horses will run this year.

Pearlside (FR, 2010), bay filly [Alhaarth-Prickly Pearl(Lahib)], owned by Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher S, ridden by J. Grosjean, won the Premio Carlos Sobrino (1,400 m, 2yo fillies), last Sunday at the La Zarzuela racetrack, beating Zahora (Caradak) by 1 1/4 lengths, with Lolita Pluma (Kheleyf) 3rd and Albuhera (Devil Moon) 4th. This is the first win for Pearlside, half sister to Baldoria, one of the best fillies of recent years (Gran Gritérium, GP Ciudad de Madrid).

Pearlside is thus, unofficially the best 2yo filly in Spain this year.

Six Spanish races could become Listed races in 2013

The IFHA has promoted six Spanish races to the Listed status in its Conference held October 8th. The Closing remarks document states:

"Six races from Spain were promoted to Part II subject to review of their 2012 ratings. "

The six races are:

Premio Carlos Sobrino, October 7th at La Zarzuela

The Premio Carlos Sobrino - Criterium de Potrancas is a traditional race for 2yo fillies over 1,400 m at the La Zarzuela racetrack. Prize this year is 15,000 m for the winner.

Last winners were: Irish Cliff (2011), Clunia (2010), Ercolini (2009), Aiboa (2008), Puntilla Bay (2007) and Nachita (2006)

Albuhera (SPA, 2010), bay filly [Devil Moon-Lili d'Aubois(Lycius)], owned by Cuadra Cacharela, trained by J. A. Rodríguez, will be trained by Nieves García. Unbeaten in four starts in Madrid, she won the Premio Martorell (the top race for 2yo in the spring season). She was third in the Criteriun Nacional at San Sebastián, her last start.

Kurdo and Ranyan win the Memorial trials

There were six races yesterday at the La Zarzuela racetrack, including two races of 2.200 m, one for 4yo+ and the other one for 3yos, with 8,000 euros for the winners:


Kurdo (FR, 2008), bay colt [Baptize-La Sayida(Fairy King)], owned by Yeguada AGF, trained by G. Arizkorreta and ridden by V. Janacek won the Premio Cruzcampo-Chacal at the La Zarzuela racetrack, beating Arnuero (GB, 2008), bay colt [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)], owned by Cuadra Medreal, trained by M. Delcher S, ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbin by a length in one of the highlights of the Sunday meeting. Domeside (GB, 2006, Domedriver), was third and Seminole Cry was fourth.

Red Soles commanded the race with Karluv Most second until the far stretch, in which Karluv Most took the lead. He continued to lead the race until the home strecth in whichi he was surpassed by Kurdo and Arnuero. Kurdo held off the Arnuero attack.

Karluv Most experienced a problem, his jockey dismounted after the race to return and he may be injured (news pending)

In the Premio Royal Gait, the winner was Ranyan (SPA, 2009), ch. gelding [Gold Away-Triple Two(Pivotal)], owned by Cuadra Agrado, trained by Teo Callejo and ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina, who beat Arsalan (GB, 2009), bay colt [Halling-Kali(Linamix)], owned by Reza Pazooki, trained by F. Rodríguez and ridden by J. Grosjean by 8 lengths, with Galipoli (FR, 2009), third.

In the first race (1,500 m, 2yo, 6,000 euros for the winner), Son Bou (GB, 2010,) [Medicean-Barreda(Linamix)] won by 7 lengths leaving a very good impression. Dagoberto (Dyhim Diamond) was 2nd and Collio Side (Caradak) was third. The 2nd dam of Son Bou is Teresa (Rheffissimo) one of the best fillies in the history of Spanish turf.

Trial races for the Memorial tomorrow Sunday

The Sunday meeting at La Zarzuela includes  2 races as preparatory races for the Memorial Duque de Toledo (October 21th). Both are 2,200 races with 8,000 euros for the winners

Skinside wins the Benitez de Lugo

Skinside (FR, 2009), bay filly, [Gentlewave-Anais Filly(Verglas)], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by Ch. Delcher and ridden by Julien Grosjean, won yesterday the Premio Ricardo Ruiz Benítez de Lugo (2,200 m, 3yo+ fillies, 20,000 euros for the winner), the most important race of the meeting and one of the highlights of the autumn season.

Skinside came from last in the stretch, along the rail, to beat the favourite and winner of the 2011 edtion, Casaca (Medicean) by a length, Azafata (Motivator) was 3rd and Relámpago (Observatory), 4th.

Amorebieta led the race with Ketala second, with a comfortable pace, until the final turn, in which there was a sudden increase in the speed. Casaca attacked along the outer side of the field, while Skinside went along the rail and held off Casaca.

In the other races of the meeting:
Duendecillo (SPA, 2010) [Visindar-Chloe(Green Desert)], easily won the Premio Asociación de Criadores, a 1,400 m race for 2yos who were presented at the ACPSIE sales. He beat Sol Dyhim (Dyhim Diamond) by three lengths, with Cotonio (Multazem) third. Here is the race: Premio Asociación de Criadores  . This is the 2nd win in two starts for Duendecillo, who is the first product of Visindar to win.

Negrete (Hold that Tiger) won the 1st part of the split handicap over 1,400 m, beating Altamir One (Act One) and Aguamarina (Ifraaj).

In the 2nd part, the winner was Pichuca (Silent Times), with El Africano (Luth Dancer) 2nd and Ariza (Diktat) 3rd.

Muñeca Brava (Noverre) won the Premio Cruzcampo-Memorial Luis Maroto (claiming, amateur jockeys, 1,600 m, 3yo+), beating Turrialba (Trade Fair) and Blaise Tower (Fantastic Light),

And in the Premio Cría Nacional-Revirado (2,100 m, Spanish bred 3yo), the results were: 1st Gimena (Baptize), 2nd Nonalass (Fol Parade) and 3rd Sukarrieta (Leadership)

Premio Ricardo Ruiz Benítez de Lugo next Sunday

The highlight of this Sunday's meeting (2nd meeting of the autumn season) is the Premio Ricardo Ruiz Benítez de Lugo, a traditional race for 3yo+ fillies over 2,200 m and one of the most important races for fillies of the Spanish turf. There is a purse of 20,000 euros for the winner.

Joint yearling sale ACPSIE-SBA, Madrid, La Zarzuela racetrack, Sept 29th


The SBA company and the ACPSIE (Spanish Breeders Association) will hold their annual yearling sales next Saturday 29 of September at the La Zarzuela racetrack. As in 2011, the sales will take place in the same place, at the same time, but each one under its own conditions.

The highlights of yesterday meeting at La Zarzuela were the prep races for the GP Hispanidad (1,600 m, 3yo+, to be run next October 12th), two races over a mile, for 4yo+ and for 3yo.

Ariete Arrollador (GB, 2007), bay colt [Kingsalsa-Proud Douna(Kaldoun)], owned by Cuadra Albero, trained by G. Arizkorreta, ridden by V. Janacek, won the Premio Young Tiger (1,600 m, 4yo+, 8,000 euros for the winner), beating by 3/4 length the frontrunner La Llanura (CAN, 2008), gray filly [El Prado-Herzblatt(Cozzene)], owned by Cuadra Tiziano, trained by M. Delcher S, who was ridden by Jorge Horcajada, with Risby (Big Shuffle) 3rd and Weststow (Medicean) 4th.

Australia Day won the GP de San Sebastián

Australia Day (IRE, 2003), gray gelding [Key of Luck-Atalina(Linamix)], owned by Skippty & TP, trained by P. Webber won the GP de San Sebastián (2,800 m, 3yo+, 18,000 euros for the winner) last Sunday, ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbin, in the last meeting of the San Sebastian summer season.
Casar (IRE, 2008), ch. gelding [Hurricane Run-Thoroughly(Woodman)], owned by Cuadra Medreal, trained by M. Delcher S, and ridden by V, Janacek, was 2nd, Achtung (SPA, 2008), a bay colt [Sulamani-Aurea(Silvano)], owned by Cuadra Enalto, trained by Roberto López. and ridden by J. Grosjean finished 3rd and Tsarabi (IRE, 2005), bay colt [Hernando-Veronica Cooper(Kahyasi)], owned by Cuadra Eva, trained by A. Imaz, was 4th.

Giggolo Star and Dansico commanded the race at the begining but, at the first pass thorugh the finish line, Australia Day was already leading the race and he was comfortable until the end, winning easily by four lengths. Casar did a chaotic late charge to be second, 4 lengths ahead of Achtung, who, in turn left Tsarabi 4 lengths behind. Entre Copas, winner of the 2011 edition, was fifth

Australia Day was third in the Copa de Oro won by Pazifizsturm.
The owner of Australia Day bought last Saturday the top lot of the Dehesa de Milagro yearling sale.

In the rest of the meeting,  there was the Dehesa de Milagro sale race, a 1,400 m race for 2yo sold at the 2011 Milagro sale, with a purse of 30,000 euros for the winner.

The race was won by French raider Show Gorb (SPA, 2010), a bay filly by Caradak and Triple Two(Pivotal)), owned by Claude Uzan and trained and ridden by P. Sogorb. She came from behind to surpass Lolita Pluma (Kheleyf), Briseida (Keltos) and Hizun (Halling).

There was also the Premio European Breeder's Fund, a 1,600 m race for 3yo+ fillies, and it was won by Baronia (SPA, 2007), bay filly [Bahhare-Lonia(Royal Academy)], owned by Cuadra L'Etoile, trained by J. L. de Salas, who was ridden by Vaclav Janacek and beat by 1 3/4 lengths New Order (Multazem), with Bellaside (La Vie dei Colori) third and Silent Victory (Silent Times) 4th.
Disappointing performances of Irish Cliff (Marju) and Ketala (Gold Away).

Baronia already won this race and 2011 and won this summer the Premio Kutxa (main race for 3y+ fillies) on 2,200 m

Results of the Dehesa de MIlagro yearling sale

The top price of the Dehesa de Milagro yearling sale held yesterday at San Sebastian was paid for Lot 44, a filly by Sakhee and Doohulla (Stravinsky),. half sister to Spanish Oaks winner Clunia and to Gr. 3 winner in France, Xanadou. She reached 48,000 euros

The second highest (45,000 euros) was realized by Lot 54, a bay colt by Sir Percy and Got to Go (Shareef Dancer), who is hals brother to Spanish Derby winner Ayanz

Lot 57, a bay colt by Green Tune and Ishi Adiva (Ishuguru) was sold in 31,000 euros

Next higher price was lot 22 (30,000 euros), a bay colt by Halling and Sleeping Storm (Danehill Dancer)

Lot 31, a bay filly by Le Havre and Alyousufeya(Kingmambo), was sold for 28,000 euros.


Only 4 lots received no bids and the overall results can be considered very good.

Dehesa de Milagro yearling sale, Saturday 8 Sept 2012, San Sebastián racetrack

The Dehesa de Milagro will hold its annual yearling sale at the San Sebastián racetrack next Saturday September 8th. There is a total of 54 lots (after withdrawals and additions), by stallions Amadeus Wolf, Aussie Rules, Bluegrass Cat, Caradak, Country Reel, Diktat, Doctor Dino, Dutch Art, Dyhim Diamond, Green Tune, Halling, Keltos, Kheleyf, Leadership, Le Havre, Multiplex, Observatory, Pivotal, Pyrus, Sakhee, Shirocco, Sir Percy and Visindar

Some of the lots are:

Lot 1 is a bay filly by Pyrus and Johanie Cara (Johan Quatz). Johanie Cara was 3rd in the Beamonte (Oaks) and in the GP de Madrid.

Lot 16 is a bay filly by Sakhee and Poliaurea(Poliglote). Poliaurea won the Clásico Diego White - G3 in Argentina.

Lot 29 is a bay filly by Pyrus and Abril (Anabaa). Abril won the Premio Kutxa and was 2nd in the Premio Valderas (1000 Guineas) and 3rd in the Beamonte (Oaks).

Lot 37 is a bay colt by Pyrus and Bright and Early (Cadeaux Generaux), own brother to Adjuge (winner of the Gran Critérium)

Pazifiksturm wins the Copa de Oro de San Sebastián

Pazifiksturm (GER, 2007), [Samum-La Parabol(Trempolino)], owned by Cuadra Martul, trained by Ana Imaz and ridden by J. B, Hamel, won yesterday the Copa de Oro de San Sebastián (2,400 m, 3yo+, wight for age, 40,000 euros for the winner) in the Lasarte racetrack. Phuket (SPA, 2009) [Multazem-New Vert(Vert Amande)] was 2nd, Australia Day was third and the Spanish Derby winner Fortun was 4th.

Australia Day commanded the race in the first part, but Pazifiksturm took the lead before the final stretch, to keep it relatively easy, winnin by a margin of 3 1/2 lengths over late charging Phuket.

Pazifiksturm is having an outstanding year, winning the Mijas Cup 2012  in March and the Prix Sa Majesté le Roi VI in Morocco  in June. He was second to Bannaby in the 2012 edition of the Copa de Oro. Pazifiksturm is a classic winner of the Premio Villamejor (St. Leger) in 2010.

Karluv Most won the GP Ciudad de Madrid

[After a vacation break, time to catch up with recent meetings]

Karluv Most (FR, 2006), bay colt, [Della Francesca-La Vlatava(Grand Lodge)], owned by Cuadra Cholaica, trained by J. L. Maroto and ridden by Charles Nora won last 24 June the GP Ciudad de Madrid (2,500 m, 3yo+, 40,600 euros for the winner), beating Entre Copas (Sakhee), with Plantagenet (Trade Fair) third and Aspasia de Mileto (Hurricane Run) fourth.

The race was commanded by Karluv Most from the gates, followed by Entre Copas, with a very slow pace. The first position was never threatened, but Plantagenet fought for second with Entre Copas, who held him off easily.

This is the 2nd win in this race for Karluv Most, winner also of the 2012 edition. The first two have been 1-2, 2-1 and 1-2 in the last three editions.

The highlight of the last Sunday meeting of the La Zarzuela spring season is the GP Ciudad de Madrid (2,500 m, 3yo+, weight for age, 40,600 euros for the winner)

Domeside (GB, 2006), bay colt [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz(Kris)], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher S., will be ridden by J. Grosjean. Winner of the 2009 Villapadierna (Spanish Derby), he won the Premio Corpa in his last start, beating Entre Copas, Karluv Most and Achtung.

Matusalén won the GP Claudio Carudel

Matusalen (SPA, 2009), bay colt [Caradak-Bixaare(Xaar)], owned by Cuadra Miranda, trained by M. Delcher S and ridden by Charles Nora, won last Sunday the GP Claudio Carudel (1,600m, 3yo+, 25,500 euros for the winner) at the La Zarzuela racetrack of Madrid, beating Mil Azul (SPA, 2008), bay colt [Russian Blue-Cuittled(Charismatic)], owned by Yeguada Urdiñ-Oriya, trained by J. L. de Salas and ridden by J. L. Borrego, with Weststow (GB, 2008), ch. colt [Medicean-Summer Sunset(Grand Lodge)], owned by Cuadra Viguria, trained by J. M. Osorio in third place and Bellaside fourth.
The rest of the participants were Ariete Arrollador, Jokan, Volcánico, Tirion, Shumookh and Risby

The pace was very fast, with Shumookh and Risby putting some distance between them and the rest of the field. In the straight, Mil Azul was the first to attack, with Bellaside and Weststow, but Matusalén closed very strongly to win by a length.

Matusalén was the unbeaten champion 2 yo in Spain and then travelled to Dubai, where he encountered some problems, including a respiratory illness. Back in Spain he had two disappointing performances in the Cimera and GP Nacional.

Collio Side (Caradak) won the 1,200 m race for 2yos, with Zahora and Yakarak 2nd and 3rd, getting a 1-2-3 for Caradak

The 1,200 m race for 3yo+ Spanish breds was won by Azabache (Iceman), with Tagomago (Dyhim Diamond) second

Bipolar (Denver County) won the first part of the split handicap (1,800 m) with Literario (Devil Moon) 2nd

Bouquetot Belle (Graeme Hall) won the 2nd part, with Draco (Baptize) 2nd.

Patricio (Sulamani) won the 1,600 m handicap, with Sharp Eye (Okawango) 2nd.

Fortun wins the Villapadierna (Spanish Derby)

Fortun (IRE, 2009), a bay colt [Bachelor Duke-Duckmore Bay(Titus Livius)], owned by Cuadra La Toledana, trained by J. L. Maroto and ridden by J. Crocquevieille, was the winner of today's GP Villapadierna (Spanish Derby), (2,400 m, 3yos), beating Kadmios (Kavafi) by a neck, with the favourite Galipoli (Sulamani) third two lengths behind and Campillo (Lando) fourth.

Campillo, first and Arsalan afterwards commanded the field form most of the race. In the beginning of the home stretch, Jeremy Crocquevieille found a gap along the rail inside Arsalan, who was more tired and was the first to attack, helding off the final charge or Kadmios, who didn't keep a straight line, perhaps losing some ground.

Fortun was second to Galipoli in his previous start, the Premo Velayos won by Galipoli.


In the rest of the meeting, the results were:

Albuhera (Devil Moon) won the first, for 2yo, beating Yakarak (Caradak). It's the second win for Albuhera.

Karluv Most (Della Francesca) won the 2nd, beating Arnuero (Sakhee). Karluv Most won the GP Ciudad de Madrid and the GP Memorial Duque de Toledo in 2010, but had an unsuccessful streak since then.

Risby (Big Shufffle) won the third (1,400 m, 3yo+) , with Shumookh (Mujahid) 2nd.

Alfred (Egeo) won the 1st part of the split handicap, with Dime que Sí 2nd

Bailongo (Egeo) and Lodosa )(Dyhim Diamond) were 1st and 2nd in the 2nd part of the split handicap.

And Mou the Special (Refuse to Bend) won the last race, for 2yo, beating Caramoon (Caradak)

Pazifiksturm wins the GP Sa Majesté Le Roi Mohammed VI at Casablanca, Moroco

Pazifizsturm (GER. 2007) [Samum-La Parabol(Trempolino)], owned by Cuadra Martul, trained by Ana Imaz Ceca and ridden by J. Auge, won yesterday the GP Sa Majesté Le Roi Mohammed VI (2,400 m, 4yo+, approx. 89,000 euros total purse)  at the Casablanca racetrack by ona an three quarter lenghts from  Plantagenet (SPA, 2007) [Trade Fair-Crafty Buzz(Crafty Prospector)], owned by Cuadra Whylar, trained by G Arizkorreta and ridden by J. L. Martínez, who closed strongly to be second by a nose, with Last Crusade third and Mayar fourth.

Pazifiksturm won the Mijas Cup 2012 in his last start in Spain. He was previously winner of the Premio Villamejor (Spanish St. Leger) in 2012 and second to Bannaby in the 2010 Copa de Oro de San Sebastián.

Plantagenet is also a Spanish Classic winner, since he won the 2010 GP Villapadierna (Spanish Derby). He was fourth in the Memorial Duque de Alburquerque after winning in Dubai

Premio Villapadierna (Spanish Derby), Sunday 3 of June 2012

The Sunday 3 meeting at the La Zarzuela racecourse of Madrid incluids in its racecard the Premio Villapadierna (Spanish Derby), [2,400 m, 3yos, 34,800 euros for the winner]. This edition is, as always a crossroad to test horses coming from different lines, namely the Premio Velayos (won by the unbeaten Galipoli, with Fortun second), the GP Nacional (Alonso, the winner is absent from the Villapadierna, but 2nd, 3rd and fourth will run), the Cimera (Guineas), represented by Nuredyn - 4th in the GP Nacional - and Riky Rock and also raiders from France (Around the Moon, Campillo), etc.

Opikoppi wins the Beamonte

Opikoppi (SPA, 2009), ch. filly [Gentlewave-Noche(Nigh Shift)], owned by Cuadra Ussía Figueroa, trained by G. Arizkorreta and ridden by Vaclav Janacek, won last Sunday the Premio Beamonte (Spanish Oaks) (2,200 m, 3yo fillies, 25,500 euros for the winner), beating the double representation of Cuadra Safsaf, Sportside (Refuse to Bend) and Pompon Coeur (Green Tune). Iune was fourth and Nonalass was fifth.

Barañaín (Dyhim Diamond) lead the race until the home straight in which Pompono Coeur and Sportside attacked first. Opikoppi (who traveled second until the final turn) displayed her charge and, although Sportside fighted well, she was surpassed finally by a neck.

The Valderas winner Ketala finished a disappointing 8th, not showing any danger.

This was only the 2nd start for Opikoppi, whose 2nd dam, Villablanca, was 2nd in the Beamonte back in 1987. Opikoppi is half sister to the Group performer over hurdles Sam Winner and to the winner Aljarafe.

In the rest of the meeting, Dagoberto (Dyhim Diamond) won the 1,000 m race for 2yo debutants, with Helfa de Rous (Wagon Master) 2nd.

The second race, 1,600 m, 4yo+, was won by Weststow (Medicean), beating Volcánico (Refuse to Bend) and As de Trébol (Tapit). Ariete Arrollador was scratched.

Vega de Castilla won the 2nd part of the split handicap (1,500 m), with Vetonia 2nd.

The winner of the first part was Black Dibel, beating Alhaprince.

In the 1,600 m race for 3yo, Azabache beat Dakside, Alduides and Celtic Rock, with a disappointing performance by Stratvs Canarias

Other races of the Sunday meeting

Besides the Premio Beamonte, the Sunday meeting at La Zarzuela, Madrid, includes two mile races, one for 4yo+ and for 3yo, preps for the GP Claudio Carudel

 The Premio Beamonte is held since 1952 (with the interruption of 1997-2005) in the La Zarzuela racetrack and includes among its winners great names of the Spanish turf, like Robertiya (winner in 1990 and dam of Volvoreta (third in the Arc de Triomphe won by Sinndar)), Teresa (winner in 1987) one of the best Spanish bred fillies of all time, who was 7th in the Arc won by Trempolino. Jockey Claudio Carudel won the Premio Beamonte 13 times.

The winner last year was Clunia and other recent winners were Narya (2010), Carlota (2009), La Galerna (2008), Golding Star (2007)
