Casaca won the Memorial and Pearlside won the Gran Critérium

Casaca (GB, 2006), ch. filly [Medicean-Priena(Priolo)], owned by Cuadra África, trained by J. M. Osorio and ridden by Jeremy Crocquevieille, won yesterday the GP Memorial Duque de Toledo (2,400 m, 3yo+, weight for age, 30,000 euros), beating the favourite Pazifizsturm (GER. 2007) [Samum-La Parabol(Trempolino)], owned by Cuadra Martul, trained by Ana Imaz Ceca and ridden by J.B. Hamel, with Casaca's half brother and stablemate Entre Copas (Sakhee) third and Arnuero (Sakhee) fourth.


Entre Copas was the frontrunner and kept the lead for the first half of the home stretch, in which he was surpassed by Pazifiksturm who looked like he was to win. However, in a long and progressive late charge, Casaca came from last at the beginning of the stretch to win by a margin of one and a half lengths.



This is the most important race won by Casaca, who was the best filly in Spain in 2011 (winning the Premio Kutxa and the Premio Benítez de Lugo) and was 3rd in the Prix Fille de l'Air (Gr. 3). She sustained an injury and reappeared in July in San Sebastián, being 5th, then 3rd in the Premio Kutxa, then 2nd in Madrid in the Benítez de Lugo and now winner of the Memorial.

In the Gran Critérium (1,600 m, 2yo, 24,000 euros), the winner was also a filly, Pearlside (FR, 2010), bay filly [Alhaarth-Prickly Pearl(Lahib)], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher S and ridden by J. Grosjean, beating easily Dagoberto (Dyhim Diamond), with Sleeping Wan (Sleeping Indian) third and Mou the Special (Refuse to Bend) fourth.

Pearlside won the Premio Carlos Sobrino in her previous start and is the half sister to Baldoria (also winner of the Gran Critérium and winner at 3 of the GP Ciudad de Madrid).

GP Memorial Duque de Toledo and Gran Critérium this Sunday at La Zarzuela

Next Sunday at La Zarzuela there is a meeting with 7 races including the Memorial Duque de Toledo (2,400 m, 3yo+, weight for age, 30,000 euros for the winner), one of the highlights of the season and the Gran Critérium (1,600 m, 2yo, 24,000 euros for the winner)

The field of this year includes four Classic winners: Domeside, Plantagenet, Pazifiksturm and Fortun, along with the winners of the prep races, Kurdo and Ranyan, Arnuero (2nd last year) and G3 placed Casaca. The Memorial Duque de Toledo is included in the list of races under consideration for inclusion at Listed level.  These are the participants:

Arnuero (GB, 2008), bay colt [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)], owned by Cuadra Medreal, trained by M. Delcher S, will be ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina. He was second last year to Ayanz. He prefers soft going.

Domeside (GB, 2006), bay colt [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz(Kris)], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher S., will be ridden by J. Grosjean.Winner of the 2009 Villapadierna (Spanish Derby), he is somewhat irregular

Entre Copas (GB, 2004), ch. gelding [Sakhee-Priena(Priolo)], owned by Cuadra África, trained by J. M. Osorio, will be ridden by A. Gómez. The Horse of the Year in 2011 is not having a good year and stable jockey Crocquevieille has chosen her sister Casaca.

Kurdo (FR, 2008), bay colt [Baptize-La Sayida(Fairy King)], owned by Yeguada AGF, trained by G. Arizkorreta, will be ridden by V. Janacek. .He won the preparatory race.

Pazifizsturm (GER. 2007) [Samum-La Parabol(Trempolino)], owned by Cuadra Martul, trained by Ana Imaz Ceca, will be ridden by J. B. Hamel. Winner of the Mijas Cup,also won in Morocco and the Copa de Oro de San Sebastián. He will be the favourite and his win would mean an outstanding year. He is a Classic winner of the Premio Villamejor (Spanish St. Leger)


Plantagenet (SPA, 2007) [Trade Fair-Crafty Buzz(Crafty Prospector)], owned by Cuadra Whylar, trained by G Arizkorreta, will be ridden by J. L. Martínez. Winner of the 2010 GP Villapadierna (Spanish Derby), the first Spanish bred winner in Dubai.

Kurdo and Ranyan win the Memorial trials

There were six races yesterday at the La Zarzuela racetrack, including two races of 2.200 m, one for 4yo+ and the other one for 3yos, with 8,000 euros for the winners:


Kurdo (FR, 2008), bay colt [Baptize-La Sayida(Fairy King)], owned by Yeguada AGF, trained by G. Arizkorreta and ridden by V. Janacek won the Premio Cruzcampo-Chacal at the La Zarzuela racetrack, beating Arnuero (GB, 2008), bay colt [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)], owned by Cuadra Medreal, trained by M. Delcher S, ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbin by a length in one of the highlights of the Sunday meeting. Domeside (GB, 2006, Domedriver), was third and Seminole Cry was fourth.

Red Soles commanded the race with Karluv Most second until the far stretch, in which Karluv Most took the lead. He continued to lead the race until the home strecth in whichi he was surpassed by Kurdo and Arnuero. Kurdo held off the Arnuero attack.

Karluv Most experienced a problem, his jockey dismounted after the race to return and he may be injured (news pending)

In the Premio Royal Gait, the winner was Ranyan (SPA, 2009), ch. gelding [Gold Away-Triple Two(Pivotal)], owned by Cuadra Agrado, trained by Teo Callejo and ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina, who beat Arsalan (GB, 2009), bay colt [Halling-Kali(Linamix)], owned by Reza Pazooki, trained by F. Rodríguez and ridden by J. Grosjean by 8 lengths, with Galipoli (FR, 2009), third.

In the first race (1,500 m, 2yo, 6,000 euros for the winner), Son Bou (GB, 2010,) [Medicean-Barreda(Linamix)] won by 7 lengths leaving a very good impression. Dagoberto (Dyhim Diamond) was 2nd and Collio Side (Caradak) was third. The 2nd dam of Son Bou is Teresa (Rheffissimo) one of the best fillies in the history of Spanish turf.

In the 3 parts of the split handicap over 1,800 m, the winners were: Mayerling, Kiumars and Lucciole Lol

Trial races for the Memorial tomorrow Sunday

The Sunday meeting at La Zarzuela includes  2 races as preparatory races for the Memorial Duque de Toledo (October 21th). Both are 2,200 races with 8,000 euros for the winners

GP Ciudad de Madrid, Sunday 24 June 2012

The highlight of the last Sunday meeting of the La Zarzuela spring season is the GP Ciudad de Madrid (2,500 m, 3yo+, weight for age, 40,600 euros for the winner)

Arnuero (GB, 2008), bay colt [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)], owned by Cuadra Medreal, trained by M. Delcher S. Will be ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina. He was second to Ayanz in the Memorial Duque de Toledo last year, and was 3rd and 2nd in his previous starts.

Domeside (GB, 2006), bay colt [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz(Kris)], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher S., will be ridden by J. Grosjean. Winner of the 2009 Villapadierna (Spanish Derby), he won the Premio Corpa in his last start, beating Entre Copas, Karluv Most and Achtung.

Aspasia de Mileto (GB, 2008), bay filly [Hurricane Run-Fabulous Speed(Silver Hawk)], owned and trained by J. M. Osorio, Duque de Alburquerque. Winner of the Valderas (1000 Guineas) last year, he was also third in the Derby.  Afterwards, she was transferred to trainer Carlos Laffon in Paris and he was 2nd in the Listed Prix Liancourt





Azafata (SPA, 2009) [Motivator-Anysheba(Alysheba)]. owned by Cuadra Chamartín, trained by J. López. She has won her last 2 starts.


Previous winners of the GP Ciudad de Madrid have been: Entre Copas (2011), Karluv Most (2010), Faramir (2009), Bannaby (2008), Premier Galop  (2007) and Baldoria (2006).

Abdel won the Memorial Duque de Alburquerque

The 2nd running of the GP Memorial Duque de Alburquerque (2,100 m, 4yo+, 17,400 euros for the winner), was won by Abdel (FR, 2008), [Dyhim Diamond-Leonor de Guzmán(Glauco)],  the bay colt owned and trained by J. M. Osorio, the current Duque de Alburquerque. Abdel was ridden by J. E. Jarcovsky, who had him in the second position after the frontrunner Nelson Groom (Charming Groom) for most of the race. Abdel found himself boxed in the home stretch when Plantagenet attacked Nelson Groom and Jarcovsky had a difficult time finding the way out, although, once in the clear, Abdel showed a remarkable turn of foot to surpasse Nelson Groom by a length, with Arnuero (Sakhee) third and Plantagenet fourth.

This is the 6th win in 10 starts for Abdel, who has performed at the highest level in 1,400 m (Antonio Blasco), 1,600 GP Hispanidad), 2,400 m (Copa de Oro) and now 2,100 m.

Teobaldo (Singspiel) won the 2,100 m race for maiden 3yo, with Biladi (Authorized) second.

Cañadio (Dyhim Diamond) won the first part of the 1,600 m split handicap, with Viva A Franca (Storm Cat) 2nd

In the 1,600 m race for amateur jockes, the winner was Cielo Canarias (Exceed adn Excel), with Muñeca Brava (Noverre) second.

Memorial Duque de Alburquerque, Sunday 22 April 2012

The Sunday 22 meeting at the La Zarzuella racecourse of Madrid features the Memorial Duque de Alburquerque (2,100 m, 4yo+, 17,400 euros for the winner), in its second edition.

And there is a top level field, that includes no less than 4 Classic winners (Domeside, Karluv Most, Plantagenet, Achtung), 2 Mijas Cup winners (Nelson Groom and HOY Entre Copas), along with the versatile Abdel (2nd in the Copa de Oro and winner of the Hispanidad), Arnuero (the half brother to Harbinger, and 2nd in the Memorial Duque de Toledo in autumn), etc.

Ayanz wins the Memorial Duque de Toledo

Ayanz (GB, 2008) [Tiger Hill-Got to go(Shareef Dancer)], trained by G. Arizkorreta and ridden by V. Janacek for Cuadra Quinto Real, won today the GP Memorial Duque de Toledo (2,400 m, 3yo+] at the La Zarzuela racetrack, beating Arnuero (GB, 2008) [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)] by a length, with Domeside (GB, 2006) [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz(Kris)] a head behind. Karluv Most, winner of the 2010 edition, was fourth.

The stable mate of Entre Copas, Porquenotecallas was the frontrunner, followed by Clunia, who replaced him in the far straight. In the home turn, Karluv Most, Señor Miranda and Entre Copas launched their attacks, but it was in the home straight when the first three in the wire came from behind.

This is the fourth win in six starts for Ayanz, who won the Spanish Derby (Premio Villapadierna) in his previous start, back in june.

GP Memorial Duque de Toledo, Sunday 16th October

The Memorial Duque de Toledo ("el Memorial" for Spanish racing fans) is a 2,400 m race for 3 yo+, weight for age, run in the La Zarzuela racetrack and the most important race of the autumn in Spain.

Partants this year are:
Domeside (GB, 2006) [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M Delcher S, will be ridden by J. Grosjean. He won the Memorial Duque de Alburquerque last spring.

Entre Copas (G, 2004) [Sakhee-Priena(Priolo)], owned by Cuadra África, trained my J. M. Osorio, will be ridden by J. Crocquevieille. Unbeaten in 5 starts this year, he has won the Mijas Cup, the GP Ciudad de Madrid, the Premio Corpa and the GP de San Sebastián.

Karluv Most (FR, 2006) [Della Francesca-La Vlatava], owned by Cuadra Cholaica, trained by J. L. Maroto, will be ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina. He won this race last year.

Plantagenet (SPA, 2007) [Trade Fair-Crafty Buzz], owned by Cuadra Whylar, trained by G. Arizkorreta, will be ridden by J. L. Borrego.

Porquenotecallas (IRE, 2006) [Fantastic Light-Ganga], owned by Cuadra África, trained by J. M. Osorio, will be ridden by J. E. Jarcovsky.

Señor Miranda (GB, 2007) [Fantastic Light-Ringing Hill], owned by Cuadra Los Toneles, trained by F. Rodríguez, will be ridden by S. Ruis.

Arnuero (GB, 2008) [Sakhee-Penang Pearl], owned by Cuadra Medreal, trained by M. Delcher S, will be ridden by Jorge Horcajada. Winner of the prep race. Three wins in five starts.

Ayanz (GB, 2008) [Tiger Hill-Got to Go], owned by Cuadra Quinto Real, trained by G. Arizkorreta, will be ridden by V. Janacek. Winner of the Villapadierna (Spanish Derby), has not run since then.

Clunia (IRE, 2008) [Silent Times-Doohulla], owned by Cuadra Brazacorta, trained by G. Villarta, will be ridden by J. L. Martínez. Winner of the Beamonte

Irish Cliff (IRE) wins the Criterium de Potrancas, Arnuero wins the prep race for the Memorial

Irish Cliff (IRE, 2009), the bay filly property of Cuadra Chicago, trained by M. Delcher S. and ridden by Jorge Horcajada, won the Criterium de Potrancas (1,400 m, 2yo fillies) in the La Zarzuela racecourse, beating Laura Moon (FR, 2009) [Russian Blue-Partageuse(Green Tune)], by half a length after a long fight in the stretch, leaving far behind the third, Galaxy (SPA, 2009) [Verglas-Yafoul(Torrential)] third, with She Rules (FR, 2009) [Aussie Rules-Barannia(Barathea)] fourth.

In the second race of the meeting, the winner was Arnuero (GB, 2008) [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)], owned by Cuadra Medreal, trained by M. Delcher S. and ridden by Jorge Horcajada, with Plantagenet (SPA, 2007) [Trade Fair-Crafty Buzz(Crafty Prospector)] second and Eltso (SPA, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Katherine(Don Roberto)] third. This is the third win for Arnuero (half brother to Harbinger) in five starts.

Apart from the Criterium de Potrancas, the meeting of this Sunday includes the Premio Cadena Ser, a 2,200 m race for 3yo+, a prep race for the Memorial Duque de Toledo.

The nine partants include the 4yo+ Calamargo (IRE, 2007) [Arakan-Rain of Flanders(Ranbow Quest)], the twice Classic second Señor Miranda (GB, 2007) [Fantastc Light-Ringing Hill(Charnwood Forest)], Loch Etive (GB, 2006)[Rock of Gibraltar-Amazing Krisjen(Kris S)],the 2010 Derby winner Plantagenet (SPA, 2007) [Trade Fair-Crafty Buzz(Crafty Prospector)], Porquenotecallas (IRE, 2006) [Fantastic Light-Ganga(Generous)] and the 3 yos Eltso (SPA, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Katherine(Don Roberto)], who was second in the GP Nacional and in the Spanish Derby won by Ayanz, Arnuero (GB, 2008) [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)] for his new stable, Diamant du Soleil (FR, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Solina(Acatenango)] and Rio Duerna (SPA, 2008) [Okawango-Berona(Policy Matter)]

Arnuero, Casar, Valle and Del Cossa, transferred

Arnuero (GB, 2008) [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)] and Casar (IRE, 2008) [Hurricane Run-Thoroughly(Woodman)] have been transferred from Cuadra Bering to Cuadra Realejo, although both will be kept for now under the care of trainer M. Delcher S. Arnuero is a winning half brother to Harbinger, the winner of 2010 King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes Diamond Stakes and Casar is a winner, was sixth in the Villapadierna (Derby) and is half brother to Prix de Condé (Gr. 3) winner and Spanish Derby runner up Midnight Beauty (Celtic Swing).

Cuadra Bering has also sold Valle (USA, 2008) [E Dubai-Azelna(Tropular)] to a new owner who will also keep him with M. Delcher S.

Meanwhile, Del Cossa (FR, 2008) [Della Francesca-La Frandiere(Kaldoun)] has been sold by Cuadra San Cristóbal to Cuadra Río Cubas. Del Cossa has only four starts, with one win and two seconds (to Ayanz at 2 and to Don Fernando Hab in his last start, beating Volcánico)

Some results from the three meetings this weekend in Spain

This weekend there wasn't any big race in Spain, but there were three meetings (thursday night in Madrid [dirt], saturday afternoon in Antela [Ourense] and Sunday morning in Madrid [turf])

In the Sunday meeting, the first race , a 1,000 m race for 2 yo debutants was won by Irish Cliff (IRE, 2009) [Marju-Miss Corinne(Mark of Esteem)], a bay filly of Cuadra Chicago, trained by M. Delcher S. and ridden by Jorge Horcajada. She won by a head over Hiru (FR, 2008) a chestnut colt [Delfos-Nayzak(Silver Hawk)] who finished strongly under F. Lynch for Cuadra La Milla and trainer J. L. de Salas. Also partant, Mencey (SPA, 2009), a full brother to Amadeo Rey, second in the Spanish 2,000 guineas 2010. Mencey is owned by Cuadra Los Toneles. Here is the race: Premio SEPI

In the fourth race, Premio Lototurf, a 2,100 m race for 3 y/o, the winner was the favourite Arnuero (GB, 2008) [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)] by half a length to Diamant du Soleil (FR, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Solita(Acatenango)], with Kurdo (FR, 2008) [Baptize-La Sayida(Fairy King)] third and Achtung (SPA, 2008) [Sulamani-Aurea(Silvano)] fourth. Sibila (IRE, 2008) [Sulamani-Menta(Finissimo)], half sister to Carmanor (Premio Gladiateur, 2nd in the Memorial Duque de Toledo 2010) made her debut for owner-trainer J. M. Osorio. In the Saturday meeting in Antela, the 6th race, a 2,200 race for fillies, was won by Kyra (SPA, 2008) [Egeo-Jazri], ridden by Marco Secci and trained by G. Arizkorreta for owners Yeguada AGF. This is the first race for this stable, who owns only another horse, Kurdo. She caught the favourtite Herri Irratia (Denver County) in the home stretch. Here is the race: Premio Villablanca

Indiano (SPA) wins the Premio Velayos and Bellaside (IRE) wins the Covarrubias

Indiano (SPA, 2008) [Intikhab-Badaayer(Silver Hawk)], bay colt owned by Cuadra El Potro Club and trained by G. Arizkorreta, won today the Premio Velayos with jockey Vaclav Janacek. Llanes (USA, 2008) [Giant Causeway-Coachella(Danehill)] took the lead from the beginning, with a fast pace, and kept it until the home stretch in which Indiano was the first to attack and held off the charge of Arnuero (GB, 2008) [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)] who was third and Francesco Cara (FR, 2008) [Della Francesca-Magic Cara(Akarad)] who was second. Malkova (FR) finished fourth.

This is the first win for Indiano (SPA), who was fourth, third and second in his previous starts.

In the Premio Andrés Covarrubias, the winner was Bellaside (IRE, 2007) [La Vie dei Colori-Brockton Saga(Perugino)] a bay filly owned by Cuadra Grupo Bolaños, trained by Enrique León and also ridden by Vaclav Janacek. She charged in the home stretch to catck the front runner Shumookh (IRE, 2003) [Mujahid-Midway Lady(Alleged)] who finished second, holding off a final attack by Ariete Arrollador (GB), third, with As de Trébol (USA), fourth in is return to Spain.

Premio Velayos and Premio Covarrubias this Sunday 8th

The Sunday May 8th meeting in Madrid (La Zarzuela) features two very interesting races: the Premio Velayos (2,200 m, 3 yo, traditional trial race for the Villapadierna - Spanish Derby) and the Premio Andrés Covarrubias (1,400 m, 4 yo+) with the return to La Zarzuela of As de Trébol (USA), recent Gr. 3 placed in Dubai.

In the Premio Velayos, the third race of the card, the favourite is Arnuero (GB) [Sakhee-Pennang Pearl], the half brother to Harbinger who won his last (and second) start: Premio SEPI. Arnuero is owned by Cuadra Bering and trained by M. Delcher S. He will be ridden by Borja Fayos.

Arnuero will face other five partants:

Fleche d'Arcis (FR) [Anabaa Blue-Feale(Barathea)], owned by Cuadra Talismán, trained by J. A. Rodríguez, will be ridden by J. Grosjean. He won in his last start, but this race seems beyond his reach.

Francesco Cara (FR, 2008) [Della Francesca-Magic Cara] is half brother to Johannie Cara (filly, 2003) (Johann Quatz), third in the Spanish Oaks and in the Gran Premio de Madrid. He has two starts with a third and a fourth. He is owned by Cuadra Santa Bárbara and trained by T. Callejo and will be ridden by J. C. Cerqueira.

Indiano (SPA, 2008) [Intikhab-Badaayer], owned by El Potro Club, trained by G. Arizkorreta, will be ridden by V. Janacek. He was beaten by Arnuero (see race above) and then he was second to Abdel in this race

Llanes (USA) [Giant's Causeway-Coachela(Danehil)]. Owned by Cuadra Bering, trained by M. Delcher S, will be ridden by Jorge Horcajada

Malkova (FR) [Xaar-Bonne Gargotte(Poliglote)]. Owned by Luis Alberto Núñez, trained by J. A. Rodríguez, will be ridden by J. Crocquevieille.

Llanes and Malkova were second and third, respectively, in the Premio Nouvel An won by Happy Few


The Premio Andrés Covarrubias (1,400 m, 4 y/o+) also has a very interesting field: Ariete Arrollador, winner of the Premio Cimera in 2010, As de trébol (USA), back from Dubai, Amadeo Rey, recent winner of the Premio Habitancum, Shumookh, the highly versatile gelding, Peñalen (GB), winner of the Premio Antonio Blasco last year, Bellaside (IRE), Ave Titus (GB), Magic Victory (GB), Montalban (FR) and Whoswithya (IRE).
