Australia Day won the GP de San Sebastián

Australia Day (IRE, 2003), gray gelding [Key of Luck-Atalina(Linamix)], owned by Skippty & TP, trained by P. Webber won the GP de San Sebastián (2,800 m, 3yo+, 18,000 euros for the winner) last Sunday, ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbin, in the last meeting of the San Sebastian summer season.
Casar (IRE, 2008), ch. gelding [Hurricane Run-Thoroughly(Woodman)], owned by Cuadra Medreal, trained by M. Delcher S, and ridden by V, Janacek, was 2nd, Achtung (SPA, 2008), a bay colt [Sulamani-Aurea(Silvano)], owned by Cuadra Enalto, trained by Roberto López. and ridden by J. Grosjean finished 3rd and Tsarabi (IRE, 2005), bay colt [Hernando-Veronica Cooper(Kahyasi)], owned by Cuadra Eva, trained by A. Imaz, was 4th.

Giggolo Star and Dansico commanded the race at the begining but, at the first pass thorugh the finish line, Australia Day was already leading the race and he was comfortable until the end, winning easily by four lengths. Casar did a chaotic late charge to be second, 4 lengths ahead of Achtung, who, in turn left Tsarabi 4 lengths behind. Entre Copas, winner of the 2011 edition, was fifth

Australia Day was third in the Copa de Oro won by Pazifizsturm.
The owner of Australia Day bought last Saturday the top lot of the Dehesa de Milagro yearling sale.

In the rest of the meeting,  there was the Dehesa de Milagro sale race, a 1,400 m race for 2yo sold at the 2011 Milagro sale, with a purse of 30,000 euros for the winner.

The race was won by French raider Show Gorb (SPA, 2010), a bay filly by Caradak and Triple Two(Pivotal)), owned by Claude Uzan and trained and ridden by P. Sogorb. She came from behind to surpass Lolita Pluma (Kheleyf), Briseida (Keltos) and Hizun (Halling).

There was also the Premio European Breeder's Fund, a 1,600 m race for 3yo+ fillies, and it was won by Baronia (SPA, 2007), bay filly [Bahhare-Lonia(Royal Academy)], owned by Cuadra L'Etoile, trained by J. L. de Salas, who was ridden by Vaclav Janacek and beat by 1 3/4 lengths New Order (Multazem), with Bellaside (La Vie dei Colori) third and Silent Victory (Silent Times) 4th.
Disappointing performances of Irish Cliff (Marju) and Ketala (Gold Away).

Baronia already won this race and 2011 and won this summer the Premio Kutxa (main race for 3y+ fillies) on 2,200 m

GP de San Sebastián this Sunday

This next Sunday, in the last meeting of the San Sebastián season, among the highlights, there is the GP de San Sebastián, a 2,800 m race for 3yo+ with 18,000 euros for the winners.

Domeside won the Premio Corpa

Domeside (GB, 2006), bay colt [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz(Kris)], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher S. and ridden by J. Grosjean won last Sunday the Premio Corpa (3,000 m, 4yo+, 15,000 euros for the winner) at the La Zarzuela racetrack, beating Entre Copas (Sakhee) and Karluv Most (Della Francesca).

The race had a very slow pace, lead by Entre Copas until the last turn, in which Domeside and Achtung surpassed him. However, Entre Copas managed to come back for second, while Domeside won comfortably.

This is the ninth win for Domeside, who won the GP Villapadierna (Spanish Derby) in 2009. He totalls more than 150,000 euros in prize money


In the rest of the meeting, the 1,800 m race for 3yo+ Spanish breds was won impressively by the heavy favourite Abdel (Dyhim Diamond), with Baronia (Bahhare) 2nd. See the video here: Premio Cría Nacional Plans for Abdel are eagerly awaited.

In the 1,000 m race for Spanish bred 2yo, the winner was Caramoon (Caradak), with Dubrovnik (Dyhim Diamond) 2nd.

Barullo (Fol Parade) won the 2nd part of the 2,100 m split handicap, with Bailongo (Egeo) 2nd

In the first part, the winner was Azafata (Motivator), with Barrocco (Luna Ridge) 2nd.

Jokan (Zamindar) won the 1,600 m race for 3yo+, beating Arrebato (City on a Hill)

Premio Corpa this Sunday

The Sunday meeting at LZ features the Premio Corpa, a traditional 3,000 m race for 4yo+ that has big names among its winners.


There is a field of only 5 horses this year:

Memorial Duque de Alburquerque, Sunday 22 April 2012

The Sunday 22 meeting at the La Zarzuella racecourse of Madrid features the Memorial Duque de Alburquerque (2,100 m, 4yo+, 17,400 euros for the winner), in its second edition.

And there is a top level field, that includes no less than 4 Classic winners (Domeside, Karluv Most, Plantagenet, Achtung), 2 Mijas Cup winners (Nelson Groom and HOY Entre Copas), along with the versatile Abdel (2nd in the Copa de Oro and winner of the Hispanidad), Arnuero (the half brother to Harbinger, and 2nd in the Memorial Duque de Toledo in autumn), etc.

Achtung wins the Premio Villamejor (St. Leger)

Achtung (SPA, 2008) [Sulamani-Aurea(Silvano)], a bay colt owned by Cuadra Enalto, trained by Roberto López and ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina, won today the last of the Spanish Classic races, the Premio Villamejor (2,800 m, 3 yo) (Spanish St. Leger) in the La Zarzuela racetrack over a soft going.

Casar (IRE, 2008) [Hurricane Run-Thoroughly(Woodman)], a ch. colt, Cuadra Quinto Real, trained by M. Delcher and ridden by J. Horcajada, was second by half a length, with Lionel Star (FR, 2008) [Silent Times-Lady Cree(Medicean)] third and Francesco Cara fourth.

Lionel Star, ridden by J. L. Martínez, was the front runner, followd by Labrit for most of the race. In the home stretch, Lionel Star retained strength to fight, beaten only by the closers Achtung and Casar.

Arnuero, Casar, Valle and Del Cossa, transferred

Arnuero (GB, 2008) [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)] and Casar (IRE, 2008) [Hurricane Run-Thoroughly(Woodman)] have been transferred from Cuadra Bering to Cuadra Realejo, although both will be kept for now under the care of trainer M. Delcher S. Arnuero is a winning half brother to Harbinger, the winner of 2010 King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes Diamond Stakes and Casar is a winner, was sixth in the Villapadierna (Derby) and is half brother to Prix de Condé (Gr. 3) winner and Spanish Derby runner up Midnight Beauty (Celtic Swing).

Cuadra Bering has also sold Valle (USA, 2008) [E Dubai-Azelna(Tropular)] to a new owner who will also keep him with M. Delcher S.

Meanwhile, Del Cossa (FR, 2008) [Della Francesca-La Frandiere(Kaldoun)] has been sold by Cuadra San Cristóbal to Cuadra Río Cubas. Del Cossa has only four starts, with one win and two seconds (to Ayanz at 2 and to Don Fernando Hab in his last start, beating Volcánico)

11 colts and one filly for the Premio Villapadierna (Spanish Derby)

The main race of next Sunday is the GP Villapadierna (Spanish Derby) that will have, apart from a very interesting field of colts, the presence of a filly (Aspasia de Mileto) and the presence of Italian jockey Mirco Demuro (winner of the last edition of the Dubai World Cup), who will ride Ayanz. The Premio Villapadierna is run in the La Zarzuela track in Madrid, over 2,400 m, since 1952.

The partants are:

Ayanz (GB, 2008) [Tiger Hill-Got to Go(Shareef Dancer)] owned by Cuadra Quinto Real and trained by G. Arizkorreta, will be ridden by Mirco Demuro. Ayanz won in a very impressive way the Hándicap Opcional in March and was third in the Premio Cimera (1,000 Guineas), coming from far behind. Ayanz is half brother to Sarasate (2006, by Sakhee), who was fourth in this race in 2009.

Cape Point (FR, 2008) [Anabaa Blue-Galgarina(Double Bed)], owned by Cuadra Edif, trained by R. Martín, will be ridden by C. Nora. He has run only in France, with a French rating of 38.

Casar (IRE, 2008) [Hurricane Run-Thoroughly(Woodman)], owned by Cuadra Bering, trained by M. Delcher S, will be ridden by Borja Fayos. Only two starts, with a win in the last one, only 9 days before the Derby. Casar is half brother to Midnight Beauty (IRE, 2004, by Celtic Swing), who won the Prix Condé (Gr. 3, France) at two and was second in the Premio Villapadierna in 2007.

Dunboinee (IRE, 2008) [King's Best-For Starters(In the Wings)], owned by Cuadra Martul, trained by A. imaz, will be ridden by D. Boeuf. He was second to Clunia (IRE) in San Sebastián at two (Criterium Internacional) and has run mostly in France, including a 2,400 m race with a French rating of 40. Cuadra Martul and trainer A. Imaz won this race in 2008 with Tsarabi

Eltso (SPA, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Katherine(Don Roberto)], owned by Cuadra San Cristóbal, trained by J. López, will be ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina. Won in his debut and then was second to Festeiro in the GP Nacional.

Festeiro (SPA, 2008 [Fol Parade-New Vert(Vert Amande)], owned by Cuadra El Negredo, trained by M Delcher (Senior), will be ridden by Jorge Horcajada. Winner of the Premio Cimera and of the Gran Premio Nacional, Festeiro is half brother to Newango (SPA)and Vert Helice

Francesco Cara (FR, 2008) [Della Francesca-Magic Cara(Akarad)], owned by Cuadra Santa Bárbara, trained by T. Callejo, will be ridden by Fergal Lynch. He is half brother to Johanie Cara, third in the Premio Beamonte (Oaks) in 2006.

Happy Few (GB, 2008) [Ballingarry-Ventlera(Gulch)], owned by Cuadra Odisea, trained by I. Gómez, will be ridden by J. Grosjean. Winner of the Premio Nouvel An.

Indiano (SPA, 2008) [Intikhab-Badaayer(Silver Hawk)], owned by El Potro Club, trained by G. Arizkorreta, will be ridden by V. Janacek. Winner of the Premio Velayos

Malkova (FR, 2008) [Xaar-Bonne Gargotte(Poliglote)], owned by Cuadra Yudakova, trained by J. A. Rodríguez, will be ridden by J. C. Cerqueira.

Mayerling (FR, 2008) [Green Tune-Tropical Chic(Thunder Gulch)], owned by Cuadra Odisea, trained by M Delcher (Senior), will be ridden by J. L. Martínez.

Aspasia de Mileto (GB, 2008) [Hurricane Run-Fabulous Speed(Silver Hawk)] owned and trained by J. M. Osorio (Duque de Alburquerque), will be ridden by J. Crocquevieille. The only filly in the field, unbeaten in two starts, Aspasia won the Premio Valderas (1,000 guineas) and has skipped the Beamonte (Oaks) to face the colts. The last filly to win the Premio Villapadierna was Travertine, back in 1971.

Casar and Monteagudo Ebro shine in the Friday meeting

The Friday meeting had two good performances by 3 y/o colts.

In the first race, the favourite Monteagudo Ebro (SPA, 2008) [Statue of Liberty-Magic Flight], won very easily a 1,600 m race for amateur jockeys. This is the third win for Monteagudo Ebro in 5 starts. Monteagudo Ebro is trained by J. López for Cuadra San Cristóbal and was ridden by M. Casado

In the fifth race, Casar, (IRE, 2008) [Hurricane Run-Thoroughly(Woodman)], the chestnut colt owned by Cuadra Bering and trained by M. Delcher S., won by 6 lengths with an impressive home stretch, ridden by Borja Fayos. This was his second start. Casar is half brother to Midnight Beauty (IRE, 2004), second in the Premio Villapadierna (Spanish Derby) in 2007 and winner at two of the Prix Condé (France, Gr. 3).
