Galipoli wins the Premio Velayos

Galipoli (FR, 2009), a bay colt [Sulamani-Weet Willa(Assert)], won today the Premio Velayos, with jockey Vaclav Janacek, for trainer Teo Callejo and owners Cuadra San Rafael. He beat Fortun (IRE, 2009), a bay colt [Bachelor Duke-Duckmore Bay(Titus Livius)], owned by Cuadra La Toledana, trained by J. L. Maroto by a length, with Cardolan (IRE, 2009), b. c. [Azamour-Plutonia(Sadler's Wells)] third some 5 lengths behind.

The Premio Velayos (2,200 m, 3yo, 15,000 euros for the winner) is a traditional prep race for the Premio Villapadierna (Spanish Derby).

Thsi is the third win in as many starts for Galipoli, half brother to the Group 3 winners Holberg and Undermine. His dam, Sweet Willa is own sister to the G1W Willa on the Move (Ashland Stakes, 2nd Spinster Stakes, Gazelle Stakes).

The other highlight of the meeting was the 3rd race, Premio La Razón - Premio Andrés Covarrubias , a 1,400 m race for 4yo, won by Mil Azul (SPA, 2008), a bay colt [Russian Blue-Cuittled(Charismatic)] , owned by Cuadra Urdiñ-Oriya, trained by J. In the first race (1,400 m, 4yo+, split handicap,  2nd part), the winner was Vega de Castilla (Golan), wih Pedreña (Dyhim Diamond) second

The 2nd race, Premio Cruzcampo (1,600 m, amateur jockeys) was won by Libertino (Daliapour), with Sandoval (Ishiguru) 2nd.

In the first part of the 1,400 m split handicap, the winner was Liniberto (Bertolini), with As de Thomas (Bahri) 2nd.

In the last race, a 2,400 m race for 4yo+, the winner was Meneldor (Barathea), with Porquenotecallas (Fantastic Light) second

Galileus won the sprint (Premio Vertice 360)

There was a meeting yesterday at the La Zarzuela racetrack, with 4 races on dirt and one race on turf, the Premio Vértice (1,200 m, 7,200 m euros for the winner).

And the Premio Vértice 360 was won by the only 3yo, Galileus (SPA, 2009) [Sorcerous-Zone Spirit(Wild Zone), property of Cuadra Río Cubas, trained by J. C. Fernández and ridden by D. A. Sarabia, beating Tashqeel(Medicean) by a head, with Makaamen (Selkirk) third.

Aratz (Ishiguru) in the 1,800 m race for 3yo+ fillies, with Lisselan Grace (Refuse to Bend) second

Castellana (Yorik) in the 1,600 m race for Spanish bred 3yos, with Henares (Fol Parade) second

Covelo (Kashwan) in the 2nd part of the 1,900 m split handicap for 4yo+, with Blanca de Navarra(Limpid) 2nd and

Esquío (Baptize) in the 1st part of the handicap, with Indian Drums (Tapit) 2nd

Abdel won the Memorial Duque de Alburquerque

The 2nd running of the GP Memorial Duque de Alburquerque (2,100 m, 4yo+, 17,400 euros for the winner), was won by Abdel (FR, 2008), [Dyhim Diamond-Leonor de Guzmán(Glauco)],  the bay colt owned and trained by J. M. Osorio, the current Duque de Alburquerque. Abdel was ridden by J. E. Jarcovsky, who had him in the second position after the frontrunner Nelson Groom (Charming Groom) for most of the race. Abdel found himself boxed in the home stretch when Plantagenet attacked Nelson Groom and Jarcovsky had a difficult time finding the way out, although, once in the clear, Abdel showed a remarkable turn of foot to surpasse Nelson Groom by a length, with Arnuero (Sakhee) third and Plantagenet fourth.

This is the 6th win in 10 starts for Abdel, who has performed at the highest level in 1,400 m (Antonio Blasco), 1,600 GP Hispanidad), 2,400 m (Copa de Oro) and now 2,100 m.

In the 1,600 m race for amateur jockes, the winner was Cielo Canarias (Exceed adn Excel), with Muñeca Brava (Noverre) second.

Valiant Blue won the Nouvel An

Valiant Blue (IRE, 2009), a bay colt [Moss Vale-Tiltili(Spectrum)] won last Friday the Premio Nouvel An (1,800 m, 3yos) at the La Zarzuela racetrack, beating Kadmios (FR, 2009) [Kavafi-Eriza(Distant Relative)], after a long fight in the home stretch, with the favourite Monte Napoleone (Fol Parade) third.

Valiant Blue is owned by Cuadra Agrado, trained by Teo Callejo and was ridden by V, Janacek. This is his second consecutive win.

In the rest of the meeting, Tafadhali (SPA, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Laida (Slip Anchor) won the Premio Vértice (2,200 m, 4yo+ fillies), beating Clunia (Silent Times) and Vergara (Halling). Memorial Duque de Alburquerque, Sunday 22 April 2012

The Sunday 22 meeting at the La Zarzuella racecourse of Madrid features the Memorial Duque de Alburquerque (2,100 m, 4yo+, 17,400 euros for the winner), in its second edition.

And there is a top level field, that includes no less than 4 Classic winners (Domeside, Karluv Most, Plantagenet, Achtung), 2 Mijas Cup winners (Nelson Groom and HOY Entre Copas), along with the versatile Abdel (2nd in the Copa de Oro and winner of the Hispanidad), Arnuero (the half brother to Harbinger, and 2nd in the Memorial Duque de Toledo in autumn), etc.

There are two meetings this week in Madrid, the first one on Friday beginning at 17.30.

This meeting includes five races, being the most important the Premio Nouvel An (1,800 m, 3yos, 9,000 euros for the winner), with six participants:

Makalali (IRE, 2009), bay colt [Kodiac-Hawattef(Mujtahid)]., owned by Cuadra Martel Sánchez, trained by O. Anaya, ridden by I. López
Monte Napoleone (FR, 2009), ch. colt.  [Fol Parade-Kyria(Grand Lodge)], owned by Cuadra San Ignacio, trained by Roberto López, ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina. He was second in the Listed Criterium de Bourdeaux at 2, but his seasonal comeback in France this year was disapppointing.

Nuredyn wins the Premio Cimera

Nuredyn (FR, 2009) [Dyhim Diamond-Nurenieva(Enrique)], the bay colt owned by Cuadra Zurraquín and trained by Mariano Hernández, won yesterday the Premio Cimera (Spanish 2,000 Guineas, 1,600 m, 3yo colts, 24,000 euros for the winner) with jockey Oscar Ortiz de Urbina, beating Riky Rock (Invincible Spirit) by two and a half lengths and Celtic Rock (Rock of Gibraltar), with Joropo (Kheleyf) fourth.

Stratvs Canarias and Albret jointly lead the race, with a fast pace, with favourite Matusalén in a comfortable position in the middle of the field and Nuredyn last. In the home straight, Riky Rock attacked in what seemed a decisive way, but Nuredyn came very strongly from the outside to win easily.

The dam of Nuredyn, Nurenieva, was herself a Classic winner of the Spanish 1,000 Guineas in 2006 and was also second to Jade in the Memorial Duque de Toledo and third in the Premio Villamejor (Spanish St. Leger), for the same owners, Cuadra Zurraquín, breeders of the Nuredyn. It's the third Classic for Cuadra Zurraquín that also won the Spanish Derby with Premier Galop. And it's the second Classic win for Dyhim Diamond, sire also of Bannaby, who won the Villamejor.

Premio Cimera (2,000 Guineas), Sunday 15, La Zarzuela

The highlight of the meeting of this Sunday at La Zarzuela, Madrid ,is the Premio Cimera (1,600 m, 3yo colts, 24,000 euros for the winner) that this year will have a field of 9 colts, after one of the entries (Oberón) died this week in the training track.

Albret (IRE, 2009), gray colt [Clodovil-Piccelina(Piccolo)], owned by Cuadra Quinto Real, trained by G. Arizkorreta, will be ridden by Vaclav Janacek. He won the Critérium Internacional last summer in San Sebastián and was second to Spahirside in the Torre Arias


Celtic Rock (GB, 2009), chestnut colt [Rock of Gibraltar-Luna Celtica(Celtic Swing)], owned by Cuadra Habit, trained by J. C. Fernández, will be ridden by J. L. Martínez.

Joropo (FR, 2009), bay colt [Kheleyf-Noble World(Winged Love)], owned by R. Cocheteaux, trained by X. Thomas, will be ridden by R. C. Montenegro.

Matusalen (SPA, 2009), bay colt [Caradak-Bixaare(Xaar)], owned by Cuadra Miranda, trained by M. Delcher, will be ridden by J. Horcajada. He was champion 2yo in 2011, winning the Gran Critérium and has run in Meydan, being fifth in the Meydan Classic  with a disappointing performance in his second race there.

Ketala wins the Premio Valderas

Ketala (FR, 2009) [Gold Away-Afriketa(Desert Story )] won last Sunday the first Classic of the season, the Premio Valderas (Spanish 1,000 Guineas, 1,600 m, 3yo fillies, 24,000 euros for the winner), coming from the last positions to win in an impressive fashion in her second start. She is owned by Cuadra LAC Internacional, trained by Jesús López and was ridden by Marco Secci.

Extrañeza (Caradak) was second four lengths behind Ketala, with She Rules (Aussie Rules) a closee third and Irish Cliff (Marju) fourth. Flash McQueen (Dyhim Diamond) and Castellana (Yorik) were the front runners, and the field of 14 (after the scratching of Laura Moon and Ladyin) opened wide, with Ketala, from the outside, coming strongly to win. This is the second win in two starts for Ketala, whose dam, Afriketa won the Benítez de Lugo (the most important race for 3yo+ fillies in the autumn) in 2006, beating Jade, Guadalmedina and Johanie Cara and was 3rd in the GP Hispanidad (beaten by Trip to the Moon and Prince d'Orange). Plans for Ketala may include running in France.

Compton Park wins the Premio Habitancum, Nelson Groom repeats

Compton Park (GB, 2007) ch. colt [Compton Place-Corps de Ballet(Fasliyev)], owned by Rachel Teasdale Racing, trained by J. L. Eyre and ridden by I. López, won yestarday the Premio Habitancum (1,400 m, 4yo+), beating S Grillo (Val Royal) by a head, with Volcánico (Refuse to Bend) third and Tirion (Royal Academy) fourth.
