Cielo Canarias won the GP Hispanidad

Cielo Canarias (IRE, 2008), a bay gelding [Exceed and Excel-Summer Dance(Saddler's Wells)], owned by Cuadra Grupo Bolaños, trained by E. León and ridden by J. L. Martínez won last Friday at the La Zarzuela racetrack the GP Hispanidad (1,600 m, 3yo+, weight for age, 24,000 euros for the winner), beating easily Weststow (Medicean) by four lengths, with Jakemate (Denver County) and Mil Azul (Russian Blue) close third and fourth.

This fourth consecutive win of Cielo Canarias means he has won two of the top miles of the year (Gobierno Vasco and GP Hispanidad), which makes him the best miler in Spain.

The favourite Ariete Arrollador didn't have a good travel and Silverside finished last in his reappearance after one year without racing.

Nuredyn wins the Premio Cimera

Nuredyn (FR, 2009) [Dyhim Diamond-Nurenieva(Enrique)], the bay colt owned by Cuadra Zurraquín and trained by Mariano Hernández, won yesterday the Premio Cimera (Spanish 2,000 Guineas, 1,600 m, 3yo colts, 24,000 euros for the winner) with jockey Oscar Ortiz de Urbina, beating Riky Rock (Invincible Spirit) by two and a half lengths and Celtic Rock (Rock of Gibraltar), with Joropo (Kheleyf) fourth.

Stratvs Canarias and Albret jointly lead the race, with a fast pace, with favourite Matusalén in a comfortable position in the middle of the field and Nuredyn last. In the home straight, Riky Rock attacked in what seemed a decisive way, but Nuredyn came very strongly from the outside to win easily.

The dam of Nuredyn, Nurenieva, was herself a Classic winner of the Spanish 1,000 Guineas in 2006 and was also second to Jade in the Memorial Duque de Toledo and third in the Premio Villamejor (Spanish St. Leger), for the same owners, Cuadra Zurraquín, breeders of the Nuredyn. It's the third Classic for Cuadra Zurraquín that also won the Spanish Derby with Premier Galop. And it's the second Classic win for Dyhim Diamond, sire also of Bannaby, who won the Villamejor.

In the rest of the meeting, Giggolo Star (also by Dyhim Diamond) won the 2,200 m race for Spanish bred 3yo, Paniside (Panis) won the 1,400 m race for maiden 3yo, Ranyan (Gold Away) won the 2,100 m race for maiden 3yo, Don Hernando Hab (Delfos) won the 2,000 m claiming race for 4yo+ and Eco Jar (Wagon Master) won the 2,100 m handicap for 4yo+

Entre Copas and Nelson Groom in the first meeting of Mijas

After the Dos Hermanas season, races return to Mijas (Málaga) tomorrow Sunday, with a 5 race program, including the Premio Ayuntamiento de Mijas (2,200 m, 4y+, 7,000 euros for the winner), a preparatory race for the Mijas Cup (March 4th).

The field includes two Mijas Cup winners: the reigning Horse of the Year Entre Copas (winner in 2011) and Nelson Groom (winner in 2010 and 3rd in 2011). Here are all the participants of the Premio Ayuntamiento de Mijas:

Entre Copas (GB, 2004) ch. geld [Sakhee-Priena(Priolo)], Owned by cuadra África, trained by J. M. Osorio, will be ridden by J. Crocquevieille. Winner of the Mijas Cup 2011, he won also this prep race last year. According to his trainer, however, he is not very advanced in his conditioning after his winter rest.

Nelson Groom (FR, 2006), gray colt [Charming Groom-Slot Machine(Highes Honor)], owned by Reza Pazooki, trained by F. Rodríguez, ridden by J. L. Martínez. He won the 2010 Mijas Cup and was third last year.

Pendenciero (USA, 2007), ch. colt [Leroidesanimaux-Trampoli(Trempolino)], owned y Cuadra La Paz, trained by J. A. Rodríguez, ridden by V, Janacek.

Señor Miranda (GB, 2007), bay colt [Fantastic Light-Ringing Hill(Charmwood Fores)], owned by Cuadra Los Toneles, trained by F. Rodríguez, will be ridden by O. Ortiz de Urbina.

Domeside beats Karluv Most in the Premio Cruzcampo

The main race of today's meeting in Dos Hermanas was a 2,200 m race for 4yo+, the Premio Cruzcampo.

And the winner was Domeside (GB, 2006), a bay colt, [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz(Kris)], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M Delcher S and ridden by Julien Grosjean. The race was lead with a fast pace by Don Hernando Hab (SPA, 2008) (Delfos), followed by Jimmy Fallabella, but in the home stretch, it all was reduced to a match between Domeside and Karluv Most (FR, 2006) [Della Francesca]. Don Hernando Hab was third and Volapie was fourth.

Domeside won the Spanish Derby (Premio Villamejor) in 2009 and was later injured. He reappeared one year ago in the Dos Hermanas season, reaching a high level in the spring at Madrid. After disappointing performances in the summer, he was third (to Ayanz and Arnuero) in the Memorial Duque de Toledo and second to Entre Copas in the Gladiateur. Plans for Domeside might include the first race of the Defi du Galop.

Other winners of the meeting were Pompon Coeur (SPA, 2009), a bay filly [Green Tune-Villa Sonata(Mozart)] in the 1,600 m race for 3yo Spanish breds. Premio Cría Nacional . Pompon Coeur is also owned by Safsaf, is trained by F. Rodríguez, and was ridden by J. Grosjean, who won three races today, since he also rode Azabache (Iceman), winner of the 1,000 m race for 3yo for traned F. Rodríguez and Cuadra Los Toneles.

Domeside, Volapie and Karluv Most in Dos Hermanas

In the next meeting, next Sunday 22 in Dos Hermanas, Seville, the main race is a 2,200 race for 4 yo+, with seven participants and a 12,000 euros for the winner. The participants are:

Calamargo (GB, 2007), a bay colt [Arakan-Rain of Flanders(Rainbow Quest)]. owned by Cuadra Jimena, he is trained by Angel Sánchez and his jockey will be J. L. Borrego.  
Domeside (GB, 2006), a bay colt [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz(Kris)], owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher, he will be ridden by J. Grosjean. Domeside won his last start: Premio Cajasol Banca Cívica, beating Achtung (winner of the Villamejor). Domeside will be the favourite.
Jimmy Falabella (IRE, 2005), bay gelding [Mull of Kintyre-Super Value(Polar Falcon)], owned by Cuadra Los Aspirantes, trained by Teo Callejo, will be ridden by J. L. Cerqueira.
Karluv Most (FR, 2006), bay colt [Della Francesca-La Vlatava(Grand Lodge)], owned by Cuadra Cholaica, trained by J. L. Maroto, will be ridden by J. Crocquevieille. Best stayer of 2010, he couldn't win in 2011.  
Kuruchet (ARG, 2007), bay colt [Beat Hollow-Karlaska(Lashkari)], owned by Cuadra San Acacio, trained by J. Calderón, will be ridden by D. Delgado. He won this race last year and was fifth in his comeback
Volapié (SPA, 2007), bay gelding [Multazem-Bassaver(Bass)], owned by Cuadra Romana Alta, trained by M. J. Pérez, will be ridden by R. H. Huayas. He has won his last two starts, the last one being the Premio Cajasol, beating Juruchet, Karluv Most, Jimmy Falabella.

Five races in Dos Hermanas with Achtung and Domeside

The five races of the January 8th meeting in Dos Hermanas have as main attractive the presence of two classic winners: Achtung, winner of the 2011 Premio Villamejor (St. Leger) and Domeside (winner of the 2009 Premio Villapadierna - Derby).

Festeiro won the Gran Premio Nacional

Festeiro (SPA, 2008) [Fol Parade-New vert(Vert Amande)], the chestnut colt owned by Cuadra El Negredo and trained by Maurice Delcher (Sr.), won the Gran Premio Nacional past Sunday in Madrid, ridden by Jorge Horcajada.

Don Hernando Hab (SPA, 2008) [Delfos-Cuddles] led for most of the race, and was surpassed first by the favourite Abdel [Dyhim Diamond-Leonor de Guzmán(Glauco)], who finished third and then by Festeiro and Eltso, [Dyhim Diamond-Katherine] (who was second).

Festeiro is half brother to Newango, who also won this race in 2007. Festeiro is the first in winning the double Cimera-Nacional since Tucuman did it in 1979.

Gran Premio Nacional this Sunday

The GP Nacional is the main race of the season for Spanish breds, a 2,200 m race for 3 y/o. This race was won by Plantagenet last year.

Partants (almost definitive) are:

Abdel (SPA, 2008), a bay colt. [Dyhim Diamond-Leonor de Guzmán(Glauco)], owned and trained by J.M. Osorio, Duque de Alburquerque, will be ridden by J. Crocquevieille. Three starts with two wins, the last one beating Indiano, recent winner of the Velayos. Here is the video

Aljarafe(FR, 2008), a bay colt [Russian Blue-Noche] trained by G. Arizcorreta, will be ridden by J. L. Borrego. He has two starts with one third and one win. Owned by Cuadra Whylar. Aljarafe is half brother to Sam Winner, Gr. 1 placed over hurdles in the UK. This is his win: video

Festeiro(SPA, 2008), a chestnut colt [Fol Parade-New Vert(Vert Amande)] won the Premio Cimera (1,000 guineas) and is half brother to Newango, winner of this GP Nacional in 2007. He is owned by Cuadra El Negredo and trained by M. Delcher (Senior) and Jorge Horcajada (who rode hime in the Cimera) will be his jockey.

Mil Azul(SPA, 2008) a bay colt [Russian Blue-Cuittled], owned by Yeguada Urdiñ-Oriya, will be ridden by F. Lynch and is trained by J. L. de Salas. Six starts, three wins, three placings.

Prince Trial(SPA, 2008) bay colt, [Federal Trial-Vagabunda] trained by J. C. Fernández, will be ridden by F. Jiménez. Owned by Cuadra Zalduendo. Has two starts, winning the last one on 2,100 m.

Impressive Kuruchet (ARG) in the Gran Premio Cruzcampo

Kuruchet (ARG, 2007) Beat Hollow-Karlaska (Lashkari), the bay colt owned by Cuadra San Acacio and trained by J. calderón won today the Gran Premio Cruzcampo. Ridden by J. E. Jarcokvsky, he took command just before the home stretch and pulled away, winning by a comfortable margin. Rayen (SPA) was second, with Blackberry Boy
(GB) third and Domeside (GB) fourth. Here is the race: Video. This is his seventh victory in 12 starts. Winner of five of his last starts.

Meanwhile, in France, Verdana (SPA, 2005) by Egeo-Vraivert, bred by Cuadra Madroños, won again in a claiming race. She has already 10 wins and 97,300 euros in prize money.
