Volapie wins the Premio Cajasol
Volapié (SPA, 2007), bay geld. [Multazem-Bassaver(Bass)], owned by Cuadra Romana Alta, trained by M. J. Pérez and ridden by R. Huayas won the Premio Cajasol Banca Cívica (2,200 m, 9,000 euros) at the Dos Hermanas racetrack (Seville), beating Karluv Most (FR, 2006) (Della Francesca), with Jimmy Falabella (Mull of Kintyre) third, Lisselan Grace fourth and Kuruchet fifth and last in his return to racing. Cabo Cañaveral did not run.
Jimmy Falabella and Lisselan Grace commanded the race until the home stretch in which Volapie and Karluv Most fighted until the line, with Volapie winning by a half length. This is the second consecutive win for Volapié, who totals 65,000 euros in prize money. He aims at the Mijas Cup, next March in Mijas.

Diktat (GB, 1995) [Warning-Arvola(Sadle's Wells) will have a fee of 3,000 euros (down from 4,000 in 2011). The sire of Dream Ahead won the the Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup (Gr. 1) and the Prix Maurice de Gheest (Gr. 1).
Dyhim Diamond (IRE, 1994) [Night Shift-Happy Landing(Homing)] will stand for a fee of 3,000 euros. Porquenotecallas wins in a muddy track at Mijas
Porquenotecallas (GB, 2006) the ch. colt [Fantastic Light-Ganga(Generous)] won today the Premio Germania Iberica Estates-Your Dream Home, beating Bottega (Mineshaft) by one and a half length, with Seminole Cry (War Chant) third over a muddy track in the Mijas racecourse.
Porquenotecallas shares owner-breeder (Cuadra África), trainer (J.M. Osorio) and jockey (J. Crocquevieille) with Casaca and Entre Copas, and this win adds up to the wonderful year of these connections.

Entre Copas wins the Gladiateur
One day after his half sister Casaca placed third in the Prix Fille de L'Air, Entre Copas (GB, 2004) won his sixth win in seven starts this year, winning the Premio Gladiateur (4,000 m, 4yo+). The ch. gelding by Sakhee and Priena(Priolo), owned and bred by Cuadra África, trained by J. M. Osorio and ridden by J. Crocquevieille, was the first by three quarters of a length, witj Domeside (GB, 2006) [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz], with Duke third and Karluv Most fourth, both far behind and Pazifiksturm last.
Duke was the front runner, along with his stable mate Karluv Most, for the first half of the race. In the second pass along the stretch, Pazifiksturm took the command, only to lose it in the last turn. After that, Entre Copas launched his attack, follwed by Domeside, and the race became a match race, with Entre Copas winning.

This is the third Gladiateur for Entre Copas, who was second to Carmanor last year.
In the race for 2yo debutants (premio Cadena Ser), the winner was Cascabel (SPA, 2009), a ch. filly [Dyhim Diamond-Channel(Sharp n'Early)], owned by Cuadra Pincal, trained by Angel Sánchez and ridden by M. Borrego, with Iune (USA, 2009) a bay filly [Proud Citizen-Jacira(Sillery)] second with jockey Jorge Horcajada for Cuadra Madroños and trainer M. Delcher. Here is the race: Premio Cadena Ser.
Jacira (dam of Iune) won the Copa de Oro de San Sebastián, had a yearling filly (by Arch) for sale at Arqana, sold in 65,000 euros. Jacira is also the dam of Royal Imari (Royal Academy), who won yesterday.

The Premio Gladiateur, as its homonymous in France, is a long distance race for 4 yo+. The field of five of thie year include three Classic winners: the Derby winner Domeside and the Villamejor (St Leger) winners Karluv Most and Pazifizturm.
Domeside (GB, 2006) [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz]. Owned by Cuadra Safsaf, trained by M. Delcher S, will be ridden by J. Grosjean. He did a good spring season, to disappoint in the GP Ciudad de Madrid. In his last start, he was third to Ayanz and Arnuero in the Memorial Duque de Toledo
Duke (GER, 2006) is a bay gelding [Second Set-Deborah(Law Society)], owned by Cuadra Cholaica, trained by J.L. Maroto and will be ridden by M. Borrego.

With the usual colors of Cuadra África (light and dark green stripes), she travelled around sixth position, to be somehow boxed at the beginning of the home stretch. However, when she found a gap, she finished very strongly.
Bellaside, the other Spanish trained filly of the field, was unplaced.

Casaca (GB, 2006) [Medicean-Priena(Priolo)], a chestnut filly, owned by Cuadra África and trained by J.M. Osorio, has been entered in the Prix Fille de l'Air (Group III), a 2,100 m race for 3yo+ fillies in the Toulouse racecourse, next November 11th.
Casaca is arguably the best filly in Spain, since she has won both the Premio Kutxa in San Sebastián (summer) and the Premio Benítez de Lugo in Madrid (autumn). She was second in both classics (Valderas and Beamonte) in 2009, and she has repeatedly beaten this year both the 2010 and 2011 Oaks winners (Narya and Clunia). She is half sister to Entre Copas, winner of the Mijas Cup and the GP Ciudad de Madrid

Achtung wins the Premio Villamejor (St. Leger)
Achtung (SPA, 2008) [Sulamani-Aurea(Silvano)], a bay colt owned by Cuadra Enalto, trained by Roberto López and ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina, won today the last of the Spanish Classic races, the Premio Villamejor (2,800 m, 3 yo) (Spanish St. Leger) in the La Zarzuela racetrack over a soft going.
Casar (IRE, 2008) [Hurricane Run-Thoroughly(Woodman)], a ch. colt, Cuadra Quinto Real, trained by M. Delcher and ridden by J. Horcajada, was second by half a length, with Lionel Star (FR, 2008) [Silent Times-Lady Cree(Medicean)] third and Francesco Cara fourth.
Lionel Star, ridden by J. L. Martínez, was the front runner, followd by Labrit for most of the race. In the home stretch, Lionel Star retained strength to fight, beaten only by the closers Achtung and Casar.

Favourites As de Trébol, Bottega and Le Feu du Ciel won in Pineda
Le Feu du Ciel (FR, 2006), [Johan Quatz-Gialla] the chestnut gelding property of Cuadra Sayago, trained by G. Arizkorreta, ridden by V. Janacek, won the Premio Excelentísimo Ayuntamiento de Sevilla (2,400 m, 7,000 euros), the main race of yesterday meeting in the Pineda racetrack, Pineda, Seville, leaving far behind Seminole Cry, second, with Ilusionista third. Le Feu du Ciel has won the Grand Prix de Pompadour three times and was one of the favourites in the Mijas Cup this year.
As de Trébol (USA, 2006) [Tapit-Adelphi] won the Premio Coca Cola-GP de Velocidad (1,600 m). He is owned by Cuadra Chicago and trained by M. Delcher and was ridden by Diana López. Whistleinthewind was second by five lengths and Liniberto was third.

Races in Pineda (Seville) tomorrow
There will be a meeting in the Pineda racetrack (dirt) tomorrow Tuesday, November 1st, with 5 races.
The meeting will have as one of the main points of interest the presence of As de Trébol, who will run the GP de Velocidad (1,600 m), facing Camuray, Boreas (the half brother to Abdel), Flying Blue, Liniberto, Whistleinthewind, La Rubia, Davay, Perfectamente and Betty Dibel
There will also be a 1,750 m race for gentlemen riders (Premio Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla), including as participants, among others Monteagudo Ebro and Bottega

Abdel wins the Antonio Blasco in an impressive performance
The heavy favourite, Abdel (FR, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Leonor de Guzmán(Glauco)], the bay colt owned and trained by J.M. Osorio, duque de Alburquerque and ridden by Jeremy Crocquevieille, won today the Premio Antonio Blasco (1,400 m, 2yo+), leaving five lenghts behind Mil Azul (SPA, 2008) [Russian Blue-Cuittled(Charismatic)] second and Risby (SPA, 2008) [Big Shuffle-Lonicera(Charmer)] third by a head.
This is the fifth win in eight starts for Abdel, who totals 79,000 euros in prize money. Abdel has been third in the GP Nacional (2,200 m), won the prep race for 3yo for the Copa de Oro de San Sebastián, was second in the Copa de Oro de San Sebastián (2,400 m) and, running now in shorter distances, he has done two great performances, winning the GP Hispanidad (1,600 m, 3yo+, the most important mile in the autumn) and now this Premio Antonio Blasco (1,400 m) with a fantastic performance again.

Premio Antonio Blasco (1,400 m, 2yo+) Sunday 30th
The Premio Antonio Blasco is a 1,400 m race that represents the first important race for 2 yo+. It is named after the great owner-breeder Antonio Blasco Oller, one of the most important figures in racing in the twentieth century in Spain. He owned the Cuadra Rosales which means he was the owner of some of the best horses in the second half of the century, like Chacal, Teresa, Takala, My Mourne, Casualidad, Richal, Lorgot, Dual Sea, Barilone, Clamor and a very long etc.
He also had horses out of Spain, being the most prominent the Prix de L'Opera winner Dona Barod and Pharly, second to Blushing Groom in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains.

Matusalén wins the Gran Critérium
Matusalén (SPA, 2009) [Caradak-Bixaare(Xaar)], owned by Cuadra Aller, trained by M. Delcher S and ridden by Jorge Horcajada, won today the Gran Critérium (1,600 m, 2yo) in the La Zarzuela racetrack, with Nuredyn (FR, 2009) [Dyhim Diamond-Nurenieva(Enrique)] (Cuadra Zurraquín, tr. by M. Hernández, ridden by Oscar Ortiz de Urbina) second, one and a half lengths behind and Plenipotenciario (IRE, 200) [Caradak-Poliaurea(Poliglote)] (Cuadra Ussía-Hinojosa, trained by J. L. de Salas, ridden by Ryan Moore) third another length behind. Gran Chipi was fourth.
Saphirside took the lead and maintained it until the beginning of the home stretch. Nuredyn launched his attack (with somewhat immature ways), but a more serious Matusalen catch him to win. Plenipotenciario came from behind to finish third.

Matusalén remains unbeaten in four starts, and his wins include the Criterium Nacional (San Sebastián, Spanish bred 2yos, the Premio Dehesa de Milagro (bonus race for the Milagro Sale) and this Gran Critérium, the top race for 2yo. His win represents the first win in the Gran Critérium for a Spanish bred since the reopening of La Zarzuela in 2005.
Caradak wins the most important race for 2yo with his first crop, scoring also the third place of Plenipotenciario.

Gran Critérium, 1,600 m, 2 yo, Sunday 23th in Madrid
One of the highlights of the autumn season in Madrid (La Zarzuela) is the Gran Criterium, a 1,600 m race for 2 yo, the most important race for two year olds, that will be run this next Sunday. The 2011 edition has the added interest of the presence of one of the leading jockeys in England, Ryan Moore, who will ride Plenipotenciario.

Silverside (USA, 2006), who won the Golden Peitsche (Gr. 2) some weeks ago, was last in the Qipco British Champion Sprint Stakes (Gr. 2) at Ascot last Saturday. The winner was Deacon Blues

Ayanz wins the Memorial Duque de Toledo
Ayanz (GB, 2008) [Tiger Hill-Got to go(Shareef Dancer)], trained by G. Arizkorreta and ridden by V. Janacek for Cuadra Quinto Real, won today the GP Memorial Duque de Toledo (2,400 m, 3yo+] at the La Zarzuela racetrack, beating Arnuero (GB, 2008) [Sakhee-Penang Pearl(Bering)] by a length, with Domeside (GB, 2006) [Domedriver-Buck's Fizz(Kris)] a head behind. Karluv Most, winner of the 2010 edition, was fourth.
The stable mate of Entre Copas, Porquenotecallas was the frontrunner, followed by Clunia, who replaced him in the far straight. In the home turn, Karluv Most, Señor Miranda and Entre Copas launched their attacks, but it was in the home straight when the first three in the wire came from behind.

Nekkar (FR, 2009), a bay filly by Caradak and Imperiossa(Imperial Ballet), won yesterday a 1,100 maiden race at the Calder racetrack (Florida), in her second start.
This is the fourth winner out of seven runners in the first crop of Caradak, the Gr. 1 winner who stands at the Dehesa Milagro and the first product of Caradak to win out of Spain. The other winners of Caradak are the unbeaten Matusalen and Fearside and Plenipotenciario.
Nekkar's dam, Imperiossa (IRE, 2004), won in her first start in Spain, to be unplaced in her second and last start (Premio Valderas - 1,000 Guineas) and is half sister to Afriketa, winner of the Premio Benítez de Lugo (the top race for fillies in the autumn).

Monte Napoleone, second in the Criterium de Bordeaux (Listed race)
Monte Napoleone (FR, 2009) [Fol Parade-Kyria(Grand Lodge)], the bay colt owned by Cuadra San Ignacio and trained by Roberto López was 2nd today in the Listed Criterium de Bordeaux, a 1,600 m race in the Bordeaux-Le Bouscat racecourse, beaten by the favourite Dear Lavinia (Grand Slam)

Abdel wins the GP de la Hispanidad
Abdel (FR, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Leonor de Guzmán(Glauco)], bred, owned and trained by J.M. Osorio (Duque de Alburquerque), won last Sunday the GP de la Hispanidad, a 1,600 m race for 3yo+, weight for age, and one of the highlights of the Madrid Autumn season. He was ridden by Jeremy Crocquevieille. Abdel went second behind Tirión for most of the race, and he won easily by two and a half lengths. Ariete Arrollador (GB, 2007) [Kingsalsa-Proud Douna(Kaldoun)] was second, with Bellaside third and Weststow fourth.

This is the fourth win in seven starts for Abdel, who was second last time out in the GP Copa de Oro de San Sebastián (2,400 m) in the summer and third in the GP Nacional (2,200) in the spring. This is also the biggest win for stallion Dyhim Diamond since the wins of the French bred Bannaby.

New Parade (Fol Parade) tops the ACPSIE sale
There were 14 lots sold out of the 43 finally presented (52 were catalogued) in the ACPSIE yearling sale, in Madrid, Saturday 8th of October, with a total result of 102,500 euros, giving a mean price of lots sold of 7,321 euros. Six lots didn't reach the reserve price. The top price was paid by Cuadra El Negredo for the full sister to Festeiro, New Parade, a chestnut filly by Fol Parade and New Vert. The second highest price was for a bay colt [Fragrant Wells-Bricoleuse], half sister to the Stakes performer Bling, who went to Gonzalo Hernando Aboin for 13,000 euros.

Aspasia de Mileto, fourth in the Listed Prix Charles Laffite
Aspasia de Mileto (GB, 2008) [Hurricane Run-Fabulous Speed], the bay filly winner of the Premio Valderas, was fourth yesterday in the Listed Prix Charles Laffite, a 2,000 m race for 3yo fillies, in the French racecourse of Fontainebleu. The race was won by Andromeda Galaxy, with Splendido second and Peinture Abstraite third.
Aspasia was ridden by T. Thulliez for trainer Carlos Laffon and owner Duque de Alburquerque. This is the third start in France for Aspasia, who was fifth in her first Listed race and 2nd in her previous start, the Prix Liancourt.

The Gran Premio de la Hispanidad is the most important race over a mile in the Autumn season of Madrid. The last winners were Silverside (2010 and 2009), Shumookh (2008), Solita (2007), Trip to the Moon (2006) and Young Tiger (2005).

Valle wins the sprint in Mijas, S Grillo in Madrid
Valle (USA, 2008) [E Dubai-Azelna(Tropular)] won this Saturday the main race of the Mijas meeting, a 1,300 m race for 3 yo+. Valle, now owned by Cuadra Maidón, trained by M. Delcher S, was ridden by Jorge Horcajada, and beat Compton Park (GB, 2007) [Compton Place], with Camuray [Slipstream King] third.
Meanwhile, in the 2yo race, the winner was Pippa Snudge (USA, 2009) [Strategic Prince-River Grand(Grand Lodge)], beating Coco Palm (SPA, 2009] [Fol Parade-Chista(Green Tune)]

Eltso (Dyhim Diamond) injured
The big chestnut 3 yo colt Eltso (SPA, 2008) [Dyhim Diamond-Katherine(Don Roberto)], one of the best 3 yo of the year and who was entered in the upcoming GP Memorial Duque de Toledo (2,400 m, 3yo+) next 16 of October, has been injured in a tendon and may not run again.
Eltso is owned by Cuadra San Cristóbal and trained by Jesús López
With only 4 starts, Eltso won his debut and then was second to Festeiro in the GP Nacional and also in the Villapadierna (Derby) to Ayanz. After a summer rest, he was third last Sunday in the Premio Cadena Ser, prep race for the Memorial.

ACPSIE-SBA joint yearling sale in Madrid, October 8th 2011
The Spanish Breeders Association (website: ACPSIE and the company SBA-Sales (website: SBA-Sales will hold an joint auction in the La Zarzuela racetrack, Madrid, October 8th at 15,30. There are 52 lots from the ACPSIE and 38 lots from SBA Sales, totalling 90 lots catalogued.

Irish Cliff (IRE) wins the Criterium de Potrancas, Arnuero wins the prep race for the Memorial
Irish Cliff (IRE, 2009), the bay filly property of Cuadra Chicago, trained by M. Delcher S. and ridden by Jorge Horcajada, won the Criterium de Potrancas (1,400 m, 2yo fillies) in the La Zarzuela racecourse, beating Laura Moon (FR, 2009) [Russian Blue-Partageuse(Green Tune)], by half a length after a long fight in the stretch, leaving far behind the third, Galaxy (SPA, 2009) [Verglas-Yafoul(Torrential)] third, with She Rules (FR, 2009) [Aussie Rules-Barannia(Barathea)] fourth.

Vagabond Shoes included in the Arqana Arc Sale
The chestnut colt Vagabond Shoes (GB, 2007) [Beat Hollow-Atiza(Singspiel)], recent winner of the Gr. 3 Prix Messidor (beating Biondetti and Polytechnicien), has been added, along with three other horses, to the Arqana Arc sale, to be held in St. Cloud in October 1st.
Vagabond Shoes was previously second in the Prix du Chemin de fer du Nord, beaten by Byword.
A half brother of Vagabond Shoes, by Tiger Hill, didn't reach his reserve price in the recent Dehesa de Milagro Sale and he also has a half sister 3 yo (by Noverre) named Noviza, unplaced in three starts to date.

A filly by Jacira for sale in Arqana and other connections to Spanish turf
The Arqana October yearling sale includes, with lot number 58, a yearling filly by Arch and Jacira [Sillery-Vol Sauvage(Always Fair)]. Jacira was one of the best fillies in Spain in the last decade, winning the Premio Kutxa and the Copa de Oro de San Sebastián (one of the only 4 fillies to win this race). She totalled 10 wins and 7 placings in Spain and France and was also second in the Premio Paolo Mezzanotte, (Gr. 3) in Italy.

Casaca wins the Benítez de Lugo
Casaca (GB, 2006) [Medicean-Priena(Priolo)], the chestnut filly owned by Cuadra África, trained by J. M. Osorio and ridden by Jeremy Crocquevieille, won today the Premio Ricardo Ruiz Benítez de Lugo (2,200 m, 3yo+ fillies) at the La Zarzuela racetrack in Madrid. Narya (IRE, 2007) [Halling], prop. of Cuadra Miranda, trained by M. Delcher S and ridden by Jorge Horcajada was second, with Clunia (Silent Times) third and Tasha Linda (Where or When) fourth.
The race was commanded by Lisselan Beauty with Narya second until the end of the last turn in which Narya took the lead and entered the stretch along the rail. Clunia charged but couldn't surpass Narya. Casaca came from behind to beat both by one and a half lengths.

Premio Benítez de Lugo (2,200 3yo+ fillies) this Sunday in Madrid
Racing returns to Madrid after the summer season, and the first big race is the traditional Premio Ricardo Ruiz Benítez de Lugo, a 2,200 m race for 3 yo+ fillies, with a purse of 21,000 euros for the winner.
The race this year seems like an almost exact reedition of the recent Premio Kutxa, won by Casaca in San Sebastián.

A filly by Zamindar tops the Milagro yearling sale 2011
A bay filly by Zamindar and the Gr. 3 winner Kentucky Kaper (The Prime Minister9 was the highest price of the Dehesa de Milagro yearling sale 2011, held in Milagro, Navarra, last Saturday 10 of September. She was sold by 43,000 euros to trainer Francisco Rodríguez for Los Toneles stable.
Both next highest prices, 34,000 euros each, were paid by trainer Guillermo Arizkorreta acting for Cuadra Ussía Figueroa. One of them is a gray colt by Halling and Private Dancer and the other one is a bay colt by Sakhee and Abril (winner of the Premio Kutxa).
A bay filly also by Sakhee and Levantina was sold to B. H. Bloodstock in 26,000 euros. The half brother to Spanish Guineas winner Ariete arrollador, a bay colt by Caradak and Proud Douna realized 27,000 euros paid by Stamina agency. And the half sister to Clunia (best 2yo filly of 2010 and Spanish Oaks winner) went for 32,000 euros to trainer Francisco Rodríguez for cuadra Safsaf.
There was a highest bid of 16,000 euros for the half brother to Vagabond Shoes and also 30,000 euros offered for the first product of Ensis, but neither reached the reserve price.
In total, there were 93 catalogued products, 22 withdrawn (some might be presented in Madrid in October), 20 with no bids, 9 didn't make the reserve price and 42 sold, with a total volume of the sale of 662,000 euros.

Luis Maroto died
Former trainer Luis Maroto, one of the leading trainers of the Spanish turf in the second half of last century, and father of the also trainer J. L. Maroto died yesterday at 82 years of age.
Luis Maroto was leading trainer in 1983 and 1985 and second some other years and saddled a good number of winners of the Spanish classic races, like Koku and Orbital, winners of the Cimera (2,000 guineas) in 1972 and 1985, Herves, winner of the Valderas (1,000 guineas) in 1969, Zambia, winner of the Beamonte-Oaks in 1983, Pearl Island, winner of the Beamonte in 1986, Arameo, winner of the Spanish Derby in 1984.
Other great runners trained by Luis Maroto were Raiponce, Colorines, Coloso and Lorgot
His son Juan Luis Maroto resumed his training career in 2006 and is the trainer of Karluv Most, winner of the GP Ciudad de Madrid and the Memorial Duque de Toledo.

Bellaside, (IRE) [La Vie dei Colori-Brockton Saga] the 4 yo bay filly owned by Cuadra Grupo Bolaños Gran Canaria and trained by Enrique León, ridden by Fabio Branca, won this Sunday by a neck the Premio Pietro Bessero (Listed race) a 1,600 m race at the Milan racetrack. Although Bellaside has run in a come-from-behind style in Spain, she took the lead from the start and held off a late attack.
